Maria João Cardoso holds a bachelor’s degree in Nutritional Sciences and a master’s degree in Food Service Management with a focus on food safety, both from the University of Porto. She also has a second master’s in Applied Microbiology from the Portuguese Catholic University, where she studied Campylobacter spp. cross-contamination events in household settings as part of a European project aimed at reducing the health burden of food-borne illnesses. After the second master’s graduation, Maria João gained experience in microbiology research across public health, academic, and private sectors. She served as a visiting research fellow at the European Union Reference Laboratory for Escherichia coli including Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (EURL-VTEC, Italy) using Erasmus + funds for recent graduates, and worked at Colab4Food as a researcher. Additionally, she has experience in clinical microbiology research from two international stints in Spain and the Netherlands. Most recently, she completed the European Public Health Microbiology Training Programme (ECDC EPIET/EUPHEM fellowship) after serving as a public health microbiologist at the Austrian Agency for Health and Food Safety (AGES) and the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC). Maria João is also a Guest Assistant Lecturer at University of Porto within the course "Microbiological analysis in the food chain for the catering and food service sector", funded by the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR).
