Manuela Machado is a researcher in the Bioactives and Bioproducts group at CBQF and Invited Assistant Professor of Immunology at the Escola Superior de Biotecnologia, Universidade Católica Portuguesa (UCP). She obtained her PhD in Food Science and Technology and Nutrition in 2023. Her research lies at the interface of biotechnology, bioactive delivery systems, and metabolic disease modelling, with a strong focus on the valorisation of marine and agro-food bioresources and the development of functional foods. She has contributed to several national and EU projects, including FUNCTIONALTUNA, which delivered a functional canned tuna with EFSA-approved cardiovascular health claims, and she is Principal Investigator of FERDINAND, which develops sustainable marine-based therapeutics for cardiometabolic disorders. She has authored over 45 peer-reviewed papers, 7 book chapters, and co-edited the Elsevier reference volume Bioactive Lipids (2023). Her research has been cited more than 465 times (h-index 11, Scopus) and she serves as Guest and Handling Editor in leading international journals. By combining fundamental research with translational innovation, she advances sustainable bioactive ingredient development to promote healthier diets and circular economy strategies.
