Maria Cláudia Nunes dos Santos completed the Phd in Biochemistry in 2006 by Faculdade de Ciências from Universidade de Lisboa and Degree in Biochemistry in 1993 by Faculdade de Ciências from Universidade de Lisboa . She developed her research work in the fields of Plant Biochemistry and Physiology at Instituto Superior de Agronomia (ISA) (1993) and Instituto Tecnologia Química Biológica ITQB NOVA (1994-1999). Her PhD thesis was on the field of Biochemistry in particular Plant Biochemistry Regulation. After the PhD, she started a new research area on Biomedicine supported by 2 distinct postdoctoral fellowships. From 2009 until 2013, she have coordinated an independent research area on dietary polyphenol bioactivities and health at Disease and Stress Biology Laboratory at ITQB NOVA. Since 2011 she was also nominated honorary fellow at James Hutton Institute (JHI) in Scotland. In 2013 she was awarded a very competitive FCT Investigator grant (contract-grant) to develop further studies in the field of nutrition and health. Finally, in 2016 she established her independent research group: "Molecular Nutrition and Health" at iBET, also recognized at ITQB NOVA. In 2018 she was awarded with ERC starting Grant and established her group in January 2019 at Centro Estudos de Doenças Crónicas CEDOC/Nova Medical School. She is currently Principal Investigator at CEDOC. From April 2020, she is also Vice-President of the Executive Comission of CEDOC. Overall Career Achievements: (i) 85 publications in peer-reviewed journals (8100 times cited) with h-index of 29 (web of science) and 4 book chapter; (ii) A total income of 2760 k¿ attracted from: ERC starting Grant (2018); CHIC- Horizon2020- BIOTEC07 (2017): BacHBerry-FP7-KBBE project (2013); CardioBDP-FCT-ANR project (2013); EUBerry-FP7-KBBE (2010); Fundo EDP para a Biodiversidade (2010). Main academic activities (i) Supervision of students: 7 PhD student, 5 Post-Doc, and several BSc and MSc students; (ii) Participation in 4 PhD and various MSc juries and member of 4 phD thesis committee, both national and international: (iii) Lectures at ISA in MSc courses, at ITQB NOVA PhD program and in FMUC doctoral program in Health Sciences; (iv) Participation in several International Conferences with 17 Papers in conference proceedings with referee, more than 100 posters in International Conferences and 24 oral communications in International and National conferences/universities; (v) Organization as chair of 2nd Food Bioactives and Health, Lisboa and participated in the scientific/organizing committee of 8 more national/international conferences/workshops; (vi) Guest editor of 3 special issues and editorial board member in Chemical Biology panel for Scientific Reports from Nature Research; (vii) Participation in reviewer panels for FCT, FONDECYT, FWO, HCeres, Welcome Trust; (viii) Referee in several journals including Nutrition and Food Res, J. Agric Food Chem; J Nutr Biochem, Scientifc reports, Food Chem; Molecules, Food Digestion; Brit J Nutr; J Funct Foods among others. VISION FOR THE FUTURE Cláudia research goals are to push our understanding on how phenolics metabolites influence brain heath, breaking down the current indeterminate status of "cause vs effects". She foresee that dietary phenolics, specifically their derived-metabolites, are excellent candidates as novel prevention and/or therapeutic agents for brain health. Cláudia wish to identify candidate compounds that may support development of effective strategies to delay/postpone the development of neurodegenerative diseases.
