I am Principal Investigator at NMS with background in Biochemistry and Biomedicine. My academic journey includes completing a Ph.D. in Biochemistry at the Faculty of Sciences, University of Lisbon, in 2006, following an earlier achievement of a Biochemistry degree from the same institution in 1993. During the initial phase of my career, I focused on Plant Biochemistry and Physiology, conducting valuable research at the Instituto Superior de Agronomia (ISA) in 1993 and later at the Instituto Tecnologia Química Biológica (ITQB NOVA) from 1994 to 1999. My Ph.D. thesis, completed in 2006, delved into the intricate field of Biochemistry, specifically Plant Biochemistry Regulation. After obtaining my Ph.D., I transitioned to the field of Biomedicine, embarking on a new research journey through two distinct postdoctoral fellowships. From 2009 to 2013, I led an independent research area at the Disease and Stress Biology Laboratory at ITQB NOVA, focusing on dietary polyphenol bioactivities and their impact on health. In recognition of my contributions to research, I was appointed as an honorary fellow at the James Hutton Institute in Scotland in 2011. My dedication and excellence in the field were further acknowledged in 2013 when I secured a highly competitive FCT Investigator grant to advance my studies in the intersection of nutrition and health. Taking a significant step in my career, I established my independent research group, "Molecular Nutrition and Health," at iBET in 2016. My commitment and expertise were further validated in 2018 when I received the prestigious ERC Starting Grant. This accomplishment led to the establishment of my group at the Centro Estudos de Doenças Crónicas (CEDOC) at Nova Medical School in January 2019, where I currently serve as a Principal Investigator. My career is marked by numerous achievements, including the publication of >100 papers in peer-reviewed journals, accumulating 22,600 citations and an h-index of 40. Additionally, I have authored 7 book chapters. My research has attracted a total income of 2,760,000 € from various sources, including the ERC Starting Grant in 2018, the CHIC-Horizon2020-BIOTEC07 project in 2017, and 2 FP7 projects among other national grants. In terms of academic activities, I have supervised 10 Ph.D. students, 8 Post-Docs, and numerous BSc and MSc students. I have actively participated in Ph.D. and MSc juries, both nationally and internationally, and have contributed to the education sector through lectures at NMS, ISA, ITQB NOVA, and the FMUC doctoral program in Health Sciences. My involvement in international conferences, contributions to conference proceedings, and roles in conference organization highlight my commitment to the scientific community. I have chaired the “2nd Food Bioactives and Health conference” in Lisbon and been a part of the organizing committee for eight other national and international conferences and workshops. My editorial contributions include guest editorship of three special issues and membership on the editorial board of the Chemical Biology panel for Scientific Reports from Nature Research. I have also actively participated in reviewer panels for various esteemed institutions. Looking ahead, I envision a future where my research significantly advances our understanding of how phenolic metabolites influence brain health. My goal is to elucidate the complex relationship between these compounds and neurological outcomes, ultimately identifying novel prevention and therapeutic agents for neurodegenerative diseases. Through my visionary research goals, I seek to contribute to the development of effective strategies for delaying and postponing the onset of such debilitating conditions.
