Débora Ferreira (DF) is a Junior Researcher at Centre of Biological Engineering (CEB) - University of Minho (UM, Braga). She graduated in Biomedical Engineering from the Institute Polytechnique of Bragança (IPB, Bragança) in 2011. Two years later, she obtained a master's degree in Bioengineering from UM. During 2014, she worked on developing novel platforms for cancer diagnosis at a newly established biotech start-up, Inception - Life Sciences Research and Development, Ltd (Guimarães), where she gained experience in a highly challenging and innovative business environment. In 2015, she joined CEB, where her research was funded by the Lipid'NP'Phage project, focusing on engineering a novel platform for cancer therapy based on bacteriophage particles. In 2016, she started her PhD in Bioengineering Systems under the MIT-Portugal Program. During this time, she was a visiting student at the Department of Cancer Biology in the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center (United States), under the supervision of Professor Raghu Kalluri. She established several national collaborations including with International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory (INL, Braga), Life and Health Sciences Research Institute (ICVS, Braga) and Centre for Neuroscience and Cell Biology (CNC, Coimbra). She concluded her PhD in November 2021. That same year, she was awarded with an oncology research grant attributed by the Portuguese Cancer League. In 2022, she secured a Junior Researcher position (2022.01681.CEECIND). Currently, she is a member of the Biosystems group (www.ceb.uminho.pt/BIOSYSTEMS) and is involved in several projects. DF has published 23 peer-reviewed papers in international journals (8 as 1st author, plus 4 under review and 2 in preparation) with an h-index=12 and 580 citations; 4 book chapters and authored 53 communications (22 oral and 31 poster) in national and international conferences (presenting author in 12 posters and 13 orals, 2 of them invited). She has been responsible for the supervision of 1 PhD, 9 MSc, 1 BSc, 3 MSc curricular projects, and mentoring of 25 students (7 PhD and 17 MSc students), being actively implicated in international raising funds activities. DF serves as a reviewer for several international peer-reviewed journals. In addition, she is guest co-editing the special issue "Bio-Applications of engineered Escherichia coli" for Bioengineering (MDPI) for International Journal of Molecular Sciences (IJMS, MDPI). DF participated in several knowledge dissemination activities (CEB Open Day, Best Students at UM, European Researcher's Night, Pint of Science) and shared her research outcomes through newspaper/digital news (O Louzadense, ASPIC, MaisGuimarães, Porto Canal, Rádio Vizela). She has received 7 awards and/or honors. Additionally, she is member of several associations, including SPLC-CRS, PNEV, SNEV, EACR, ASPIC, among others.
