Paulo J. Oliveira is currently Vice-President and Principal Investigator at the CNC - Center for Neuroscience and Cell Biology, University of Coimbra, Portugal, and Invited Assistant Professor in the same University. He is the current leader of the Mitochondria, Metabolism and Disease group. He received his Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry from the University de Coimbra in 1999. In 2003, he completed his PhD in Cellular Biology from the same University. After obtaining his Ph.D. degree, Paulo Oliveira spent more than three years performing research at the Medical School of the University of Minnesota, Duluth, USA, where he collaborated with several researchers and contributed to the publication of over 20 joint peer-reviewed manuscripts. Paulo Oliveira current research interests focus on mitochondrial biology, investigating the alteration of cardiac mitochondrial function by physical activity and diet, cardiac mitochondrial dysfunction and cell death caused by anti-neoplastic agents, mitochondrial alterations during cancer stem cell differentiation and carcinogenesis or rational designing of mitochondria-directed antioxidants. Paulo has about 270 peer-reviewed publications (h factor ~44) and a large number of collaborations in Europe, Africa and in the USA. He has also received several prizes from the Portuguese Cardiology Society for his work on cardiac mitochondrial research, and recently won the FLAD Healthcare 2020 prize. Besides research, Paulo Oliveira is often involved in teaching at the Department of Life Sciences, University of Coimbra, as well as in other Universities in Portugal and elsewhere, besides participating in numerous science communication activities. Of importance, he has maintained a consistent primary role in the organization of national and international scientific meetings, including the International Courses in Toxicology (2005-2010 in Coimbra), Annual Meeting of the European Society for Clinical Investigation (2013, Albufeira, Portugal and 2019, Coimbra, Portugal), the 2014 Meeting of the Portuguese Biochemical Society (Coimbra), and FEBS Advanced Lecture Courses in Oncometabolism (2017, Figueira da Foz, Portugal and 2019 Luso, Portugal). From May 2019 to June 2022, Paulo J. Oliveira was the President of the European Society for Clinical Investigation (www.esci.eu.com), after being its Vice-President for 2 years. Paulo J. Oliveira has also been reviewer for more than 40 different scientific journals and over 10 different national and international funding agencies, including the European Commission (Research Executive Agency) and the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology. His research group is supported by competitive national and international funding agencies, including the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology, the European Commission, and private foundations. Paulo J. Oliveira is also currently member of the Board of Directors at CNC, as well as member of Board of Directors at CIBB (former CNC.IBILI consortium), the Center for Innovative Biomedicine and Biotechnology. In terms of technology transfer activities, Paulo J. Oliveira is co-inventor in two patents that were licensed to the CNC/University of Porto spin-off company MitoTAG, of which he is one of the co-founders. MitoTAG is a startup that develops targeting systems to deliver antioxidants to mitochondria in order to protect them from the damaging effects of oxidation. This platform technology has applications in diverse areas, namely as active ingredients for anti-aging cosmetics, active principles for the treatment of liver and neurodegenerative diseases, as well as anti-aging food supplements for pets. Finally, Paulo J. Oliveira is also very active in supervising Master (16 past/present) and Ph.D. students (30 past/present), as well as Postdocs (14 past/present), being also frequently invited to Master and Ph.D. defenses in Portugal and abroad.
