Gonçalo Pereira da Rosa is a postdoctoral researcher at cE3c/CHANGE in the field of natural product chemistry, with a focus on the discovery, extraction and valorization of bioactive compounds from marine and terrestrial biomass, particularly within the Azorean context. He completed his PhD in Chemistry at the Universidade de Aveiro (2024), following a MSc in Biomedical Sciences and a BSc in Health and Biological Sciences from the Universidade dos Açores. His research integrates the development and optimization of extraction methodologies, including green extraction technologies such as ultrasound-assisted extraction, aiming to maximize yield, selectivity and preservation of bioactive compounds. These approaches are combined with chromatographic and spectrometric techniques for the isolation and characterization of compounds from complex biological matrices. He has solid expertise in compound isolation using column chromatography and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), as well as in the chemical profiling of extracts. He is experienced in the structural elucidation of natural products through the interpretation of spectroscopic and spectrometric data, including nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), UV-Vis and mass spectrometry, enabling the identification of bioactive compounds. Additionally, he has developed work in the chemical derivatization of small molecules, particularly chalcone-based systems, to explore structure–activity relationships and enhance biological activity. A central component of his research is the evaluation of biological activities, particularly enzyme inhibition associated with aging-related processes, supporting the development of nutraceutical and cosmeceutical applications. His work contributes to the sustainable valorization of natural resources, including underexplored and invasive biomass, within the framework of the bioeconomy and circular value chains. He has contributed to 18 peer-reviewed publications and has participated in several funded research projects, including as Principal Investigator.
