Inês Albino holds a PhD in Experimental Biology and Biomedicine (University of Coimbra, 2025). Her doctoral research, developed within the framework of the NANOSTEM Marie Sklodowska-Curie ITN and later supported by an FCT PhD Fellowship, focused on the engineering of extracellular vesicle-based nanoformulations for targeted delivery across the blood-brain barrier. She designed a novel extracellular vesicle formulation functionalized via bioconjugate chemistry to target the brain endothelium, refining key formulation parameters to optimize functionalization efficiency, colloidal stability, and biological performance. Her work further elucidated the mechanisms underlying the interaction and transport of engineered vesicles across the blood-brain barrier. She obtained a master’s degree in Biomedical Engineering (University of Twente, 2017), where she developed supported lipid-bilayer (SLB) biointerfaces as bioactive surfaces to modulate endothelial cell adhesion. Her thesis applied supramolecular chemistry principles to functionalize SLBs with specific integrin and cadherin ligands, offering new insights into the design of biomimetic platforms for tissue engineering and cell–material interaction studies. In 2016, she joined the Molly Stevens Group at the Karolinska Institute, where she gained expertise in polymer chemistry, peptide synthesis, RAFT polymerization, and click reactions, focusing on polymeric drugs with highly selective cell-surface binding. Inês earned her bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Engineering (Escola Superior de Biotecnologia – Universidade Católica Portuguesa, 2014). During her studies, she participated in multidisciplinary projects and conducted her first research in analytical chemistry, leading to an oral communication at the 18th International Conference on Flow Injection Analysis (Royal Society of Chemistry). Following an exchange at the University of Twente, she completed her bachelor thesis on the cadherin switch (N-cadherin to cadherin-11) during osteogenic differentiation, bridging developmental biology with bone tissue engineering and sparking her long-term interest in regenerative medicine and the development of biomimetic nanotherapeutics.
