Inês Albino earned a bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Engineering after studying at Escola Superior de Biotecnologia – UCP in Porto. She was actively involved in muldisciplinary projects fostered by the school and had her first research experience in an analytical chemistry lab, which resulted in an oral communication at the 18th International Conference on Flow Injection Analysis of the Royal Society of Chemistry. Following an exchange at the University of Twente, the Netherlands, she defended her bachelor thesis work on the identification of the timing of cadherin switch (from N-cadherin to cadherin-11) during osteogenic differentiation. In this project she applied knowledge from developmental biology to the field of bone tissue engineering. This experience at the University of Twente made a strong impression on her and marked the beginning of her passion for regenerative medicine. Hence, she applied and was accepted for the master’s degree in Biomedical Engineering, in the University of Twente, where she gained insights in fields ranging from Biomaterials, Nanotechnology and Microfluidics, such as, lab-on-a-chip devices. She graduated in 2017, after performing a master thesis on supported lipid-bilayers biointerfaces to study cell-cell interactions with endothelial cells. In this work she showed for the first time the application of supramolecular biomimetic chemistry in the tuning of endothelial cell adhesion, that is critical for the development of novel platforms for tissue engineering and biomaterials applications. In 2016, she moved to Molly Stevens group at Karolinska Institute to learn on polymer chemistry, specifically, on polymeric drugs that induce extremely selective/specific binding at the cell surface. In this assignment, she gain insights into peptide synthesis, RAFT polymerizations and the mechanisms of “click” reactions. In 2018, she applied for the NANOSTEM Marie Sklodowska-Curie ITN, the same position she currently holds as a PhD fellow in the University of Coimbra.
