I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry (2021) and a Master’s degree in Clinical Laboratory Genetics (2023) from the University of Coimbra. My academic training has been strongly focused on biomedical research, with particular interest in advanced cellular models to study human disease. During my undergraduate studies, I gained my first research experience at the Coimbra Institute for Clinical and Biomedical Research, where I investigated the radiobiological effects of Radium-223 in 3D spheroid models of prostate carcinoma. Together with a specialization course in Cell Culture and Tissue Training and additional laboratory internships, this provided me with a solid foundation in experimental work and basic cell culture techniques. In my Master’s degree, I further developed my research skills through laboratory rotations in oncology, cytogenetics, and molecular cytogenetics. My thesis, “Genetic Analysis of Patients with Frontotemporal Dementia and Generation of induced Pluripotent Stem Cells and Brain Organoids,” combined clinical genetics with advanced in vitro modelling. I used Sanger sequencing and next-generation sequencing to analyse FTD-associated genes, and I established iPSCs from patient-derived fibroblasts and generated cortical brain organoids. This work strengthened my expertise in advanced cell culture, immunostaining, confocal microscopy, cryosectioning, and real-time PCR. In 2024, I was awarded a 6-month fellowship in advanced therapies, where I expanded my skills in flow cytometry and iPSC differentiation for disease modelling and drug screening. More recently, I contribute to an EU-funded consortium applying imaging-based approaches, where I aim to characterize neuropathological features, specifically TDP-43 aggregates in human-derived models of FTD, by performing 3D reconstructions and live Flow Cytometry experiments. My participation in international conferences and mentoring initiatives has further refined my communication, leadership, and teamwork abilities.
