Ana Ferreira holds a BSc in Genetics and Biotechnology by the University of Trás-Os-Montes e Alto Douro (2010) and a MSc in Pharmaceutical Biotechnology by the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Coimbra (2012). As undergraduate student, Ana was recipient of an Integration into Research Grant (BII) from FCT, which allowed her to develop several research competences. She joined the Vectors and Gene Therapy group at the Center for Neuroscience and Cell Biology (CNC) to develop her MSc project, which aimed to develop a pharmacological approach to activate autophagy in Machado-Joseph disease. This work was awarded with the Best Poster presentation by the 1st reSearch Coimbra in Health Sciences in 2013. Ana enrolled the Doctoral Programme in Pharmaceutical Sciences from the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Coimbra, supported by a PhD fellowship from FCT. During that period, her research focused on the study of the autophagy pathway dysregulation in Machado Joseph disease as a possible underlying pathological mechanism, aiming at identifying new targets for the treatment of this neurodegenerative disorder. She acquired extensive expertise in cellular and molecular biology, viral vectors, gene and pharmacological therapies and pre-clinical models of the disease. In 2020, she was involved in the implementation of protocols and certification of a laboratory diagnosis of SARS-CoV2 at CNC-Viravector. She also participated as a team member in different projects, that were disseminated in national and international scientific meetings, being the author of a total of 19 oral communications and 15 poster presentations. Ana published 8 papers/book chapters in peer-reviewed international journals (>195 citations; H index of 5), being first author of 2 original papers in top-tier journals (IF=11.45/ 8.09). Over the years she has been invited to give practical classes and lectures in graduate courses and programmes, was responsible for mentoring students in the laboratory, and engaged several scientific communication activities.
