Ana Cristina Lopes Vasconcelos Ferreira holds a BSc in Genetics and Biotechnology by the University of Trá-Os-Montes e Alto Douro and obtained her MSc in Pharmaceutical Biotechnology at the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Coimbra in 2012. During the master’s project she started to work with Machado Joseph disease in the Vectors and Gene therapy group at the Center for Neuroscience and Cell Biology (CNC). Currently, she is pursuing her PhD- Doctoral Programme in Pharmaceutical Sciences- in the same research group. The main research field of Ana focuses on the study of the autophagy pathway dysregulation in Machado Joseph disease as a possible underlying pathological mechanism, aiming at the identification of new targets for the treatment of this neurodegenerative disorder. She has extensive expertise in cellular and molecular biology and animal manipulation (drug delivery, stereotaxic surgery and behaviour).
