Paula I. Moreira received her PhD in Biomedical Sciences from University of Coimbra, Portugal, in 2007. Currently, she is Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Medicine and Principal Investigator at the Center for Neuroscience and Cell Biology, University of Coimbra, Portugal. Moreira's group is interested in elucidating the role of energy metabolism, with an emphasis on mitochondria (energy, homeostasis and signals) and metabolic hormones-mediated signaling pathways in brain changes occurring in metabolic disorders (e.g. diabetes and obesity) and neurodegenerative diseases, particularly Alzheimer disease. We are also interested in clarifying the role of hypoxia and sex/gender in the neurodegenerative events that characterize these pathologies. Additionally, we are exploring the therapeutic potential of anti-diabetic drugs, metabolic hormones and mitochondrial modulators. To achieve our goals we use several experimental models such as isolated mitochondria, in vitro and in vivo models of disease and human samples. Moreira has published more than 225 scientific peer-reviewed scientific articles. She is deputy editor of Journal of Alzheimer's Disease, associate editor of Journal of Alzheimer's Disease Reports and Frontiers of Aging Neuroscience, section editor of BBA-Molecular Basis of Disease and belongs to the editorial board of Antioxidants and Redox Signaling and Aging Brain, among others.
