Carlos Cardeira (MSc 90, PhD 95) was born in Quinjenje, Angola. He holds am Engineer and master’s degree in electrical engineering from the Instituto Superior Técnico in Lisbon since 1986 and 1991, respectively, and a PhD from the Institut National Polytechnique de Lorraine, Nancy, France since 1994. He is an integrated member of the IDMEC research laboratory and teaches courses at the Instituto Superior Técnico in Lisbon in the areas of industrial automation and information technology. He has done several post-doctorates and sabbatical leaves, namely at IRIT and LAAS in Toulouse - France, CERN in Geneva- Switzerland, Schneider-Electric Seligenstadt - Germany, GRVC Robotics Laboratory in Seville - Spain and Khalifa University in Abu Dhabi – United Arab Emirates. His main research interests include robotics, industrial automation, real-time systems, fieldbuses, and wireless communications. He published 21 papers in international journals ranked as Q1 or Q2 in Scimago. He participated in 17 research projects bring to the institution 554.1 kEuro, considering only four projects where he was the Principal Investigator. Carlos Cardeira organized or was participated in the organization of several large-scale events to promote Robotics to the general public, namely Robótica 2001 up to Robótica 2022 and RoboCup 2004 up to RoboCup 2012. Parallel to Robótica, the scientific event ICARSC was created and got increased interest by the international research community, by the technical co-sponsorship of the IEEE and indexing in IEEE Xplore. He is a founder of the Portuguese Robotics Society and participated on the government body for many years being President during the Biennium 2019/2020. He was Vice-President during the Biennium 2017/2018 and during the Biennium 2015/2016. He is a member of the Scientific Committee of the Master in Mechanical Engineering, was a member of the Executive Commission of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, and the Department Coordinator of the Students Mobility Programs (e. g. ERASMUS).
