Luís Loureiro holds a MSc in Applied Biochemistry (2015) and a PhD (2022) by the Doctoral Program in Food Science and Technology and Nutrition from the University of Minho. During his PhD, he acquired technical competences and tools on extraction and processing technologies for microalgae biochemical compounds valorization. Namely, he acquires knowledge in cells disruption methodologies, biochemical compounds extraction and quantification and conducted an intensive optimization process of biological activity assays. His intellectual curiosity, as well as persistence and determination, led the LL to develop, since his graduation, a broad knowledge in different areas. Extensive experience in molecular biology techniques, namely genomics and proteomics, was obtained in his undergraduate internship at IPATIMUP. Innovative approaches in technologies such as Ohmic Heating (OH) and implementation of cell disruption techniques in the extraction of biochemical compounds in his PhD. Furthermore, the LL is currently developing a project called PROVEGG4PASTRY, in order to identify new sources of vegetable protein in place of animal protein for industrial pastry applications. This project allowed LL to develop functional and structural characterization studies of different vegetable proteins (pea, faba, chickpea and soy), as well as to develop preliminary studies of functionalization of proteins applying OH. Currently, LL is an assistant researcher in the Blue Bioeconomy Pact (BBP), a €133M consortium under the Recovery and Resilience Plan until 2025. The BBP includes 83 national entities: 53 companies and 30 ENESII organizations, including R&D centers, CoLABs, and universities. LL leads the implementation of electric field and OH technologies to process algae biomass into high-value extracts and ingredients, aiming to maximize biomass value and create new value chains. These valences have generated LL's interest in research that includes zero-waste and circular economy concepts, in order to take advantage of eco-innovate technologies to retrieve value from agro-industrial by-products and develop new food products.
