Joana holds a BSc degree in Genetics and Biotechnology (UTAD, 2014), an MSc degree in Molecular Genetics (CBMA-UM, 2017), and a Ph.D. degree in Molecular and Environmental Biology (CBMA-UM and CIMA-UNAV, 2022). During her BSc degree, she did an internship in the Laboratory of Molecular Genetics (INIAV - Oeiras), which was crucial to developing her bachelor's project, involving the genotyping of cereals with high carotenoid content. Her master thesis, developed at CBMA and CEB, allowed her to elucidate the molecular mechanism underlying the anticancer activity of the natural protein lactoferrin and, ultimately, unravel its molecular/cellular target(s). During her Ph.D. degree, Joana had the opportunity to work at CIMA in the University of Navarra, Pamplona for almost two years. Her Ph.D. thesis highlighted the role of the N-terminal acetylation and the N-degron pathways on apoptosis regulation. These works resulted in several poster presentations at national and international congresses and oral presentations as well as in four scientific papers, one manuscript, and one review in preparation. By working with different cell models (plants, mammalian/mouse, and yeast cells), she has gathered experience and know-how in genetics, molecular biology, cell biology, and microbiology. After completion of her Ph.D., Joana was awarded a master's fellowship and she has been working on the WINE-TUNNING (EXPL/BAA-AGR/1096/2021) project, which aims to identify novel yeast strains and methods to overcome emergent challenges in wine production. During this time, she has attended different training courses and workshops, and scientific meetings and participated in and organized several science communication programs. Since September 2023, Joana has been working as a post-doc researcher in an ERC project named "BeTASTy – New Molecular and Cell-based Approaches to assess Food Astringency and Bitterness" at REQUIMTE - FCUP.
