Joana Catarina Pereira Guedes

Joana obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Genetics and Biotechnology from the University of Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro, followed by a Master’s degree in Molecular Genetics at the University of Minho. She completed her PhD in Environmental and Molecular Biology at the University of Minho, developed in collaboration with the Center for Applied Medical Research (CIMA), University of Navarre (Spain), including a long-term research internship abroad. Her doctoral work was approved with the highest distinction and supported by an FCT PhD grant. These works resulted in several poster presentations at national and international congresses, oral communications, and seven scientific peer-reviewed papers. By working with different cell models (plants, mammalian/mouse, and yeast cells), she has gathered experience and know-how in genetics, molecular biology, cell biology, and microbiology. After her PhD, Joana was awarded a master's fellowship, where she worked on the WINE-TUNNING project, which aims to identify novel yeast strains and methods to overcome emergent challenges in wine production. During this time, she attended different training courses, workshops, and scientific meetings, and participated in and organized several science communication programs. She is currently a Junior Researcher (Postdoctoral Researcher) at LAQV-REQUIMTE, Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto, within the project BeTASTy – New Molecular and Cell-based Approaches to assess Food Astringency and Bitterness. Throughout her professional career, she has been actively involved in international scientific activities, including participation in the COST Action FLAVOURsome, having attended two scientific workshops and contributed to the organization of a FLAVOURsome workshop. She has also contributed to academic service, having participated in Master’s and Bachelor’s thesis defenses, and to science communication and outreach activities, including participation in the European Researchers' Night (NEI) and in school visits to the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. She is also the author of two science dissemination articles published in EDMA magazine.
