Dr. Lima obtained her BSc degree in Marine Biology and Biotechnology, from the School of Tourism and Maritime Technology of Leiria, in 2011. She continued her studies with a MSc in Pharmaceutical Biotechnology at the University of Coimbra, awarded in 2013. In 2015, she enrolled the Graduate Program Science for Development, launched in PALOP, and then joined Dr. Gozzelino's Lab at NOVA Medical School (NMS), in Lisbon, to pursue her PhD. During her training, she investigated how inflammatory compounds, released under pathologic conditions and linked to iron metabolism, prime to disease onset. Immune-mediated, infectious and neurodegenerative diseases, like Parkinson’s, have been the focus of her studies, which resulted in the publication 3 reviews and 2 research articles, of which 4 as open access and 3 with her as 1st author. Mentoring students and contributing to the development of their scientific competence are tasks accomplished by Dr. Lima since the beginning of her career. During her PhD, she trained 3 assistant researchers recruited to Dr. Gozzelino’s Lab to provide technical support. When referring to students, she officially co-supervised 2 BSc and 2 MSc theses. While obtaining her PhD in Molecular Biosciences, in 2021, she participated as team member in research fund applications attributed to Dr. Gozzelino's Lab by FCT, iNOVA4Health and Santander Totta. Two consecutive calls awarded to that laboratory by FNRS-The Excellence of Science Program secured her studies and post-doctoral fellowship from January 2022. Upon Dr. Gozzelino appointment as Rector of the Atlantic Technical University in Cape Verde, Dr. Lima showed her availability to lecture ocean science and, as such, to transfer the knowledge she acquired on marine biodiversity and health to her country of origin. In 2022, she started teaching also at NMS, joining the Faculty of the Biomedical Research Master Program. In April 2023, she was appointed as Head of the Flow Cytometry Facility, benefiting from a term-contract with NMS. In December 2023, she rejoined Dr. Gozzelino’s Lab as senior researcher, investigating the relationship between the severity of inflammatory diseases and iron metabolism.
