The candidate holds a PhD in Advanced Biotechnology from the University of Vigo. During his doctoral degree, he had the opportunity to delve deeply into plant biotechnology and physiology areas through his research on an endangered plant, Eryngium viviparum. He developed and applied several ex-situ conservation protocols for the studied species (dormancy breaking, germination, micropropagation, and reintroduction), enhancing his expertise in different morphological and physiological parameters. He also conducted two pre-doctoral research stays at the Mountain Research Centre in Portugal, increasing his knowledge and skills in analytical chemistry techniques, bioactive compound determination and the evaluation of their potential for industrial application using different bioactivity assays. The candidate presented his thesis in 2021 with international mention and cum laude academic distinction. This research generated 3 scientific articles on the ex-situ conservation of an endangered species and its valorisation through the study of its bioactive compounds, as well as 1 book chapter on how to use neural network tools to improve the prediction of seed germination with strong dormancy. During the last phase of his doctorate and the beginning of his postdoctoral stage, the candidate applied and was granted two contracts within European projects. His participation in these projects allowed him to use the knowledge acquired during his research to help the participating companies attain specific practical goals. In both projects, he collaborated with European companies from the agro-industrial and agri-food sectors (Tecpan from Portugal, Molendum and Unio Nuts from Spain, Zini from Italy, La Mandorle from France, among others). He is currently on his first postdoctoral fellowship within a European Prima project, where the candidate has been working on laboratory and management tasks related to the project, which aims to chemically characterise more than 50 cultivars of legumes and nuts through a tight collaboration with international companies and academic entities from the Mediterranean region. During this stage, the candidate has continued his research in the chemical characterisation of bioactive compounds and their putative applications. These works have generated 4 published scientific articles in high-impact journals in the field of agronomy, another book chapter, and 3 other articles currently in preparation. In summary, the candidate's scientific production consists of 7 articles published in Q1 indexed journals (accumulating more than 100 citations with an h-index of 7, and i10 of 5) and 2 book chapters, mainly in Plant Science and Agronomy areas. Among the 7 peer-reviewed articles, the applicants' merit distribution is as follows: 4 articles as first author (57%), 2 articles as second author (29%) and others (14%). Regarding journals' impact, the applicant has published 6 of his papers (86%) in the first quartile (Q1) and first decile (D1) in Plant Science and Agronomy areas. His research has been presented at more than 15 congresses. He is also a team member and participated in writing a research project for the Portuguese Innovation Agency within the co-promotion category (collaborative projects to resolve company demands through direct knowledge transfer). This project has been approved (€205,580) and aims to develop and patent a prototype to extract compounds of interest to the cosmetic industry from agricultural waste. Finally, he also has conducted the supervision of one master´s thesis and one initial research student, and He is a guest editor of a special issue in the Separation journal.
