Patrícia H. Brito, is an independent researcher at the Universidade Nova de Lisboa, UCIBIO, FCT, and an Invited Assistance Professor at the NOVA Medical School (UNL). The main focus of her research is on the study of microbial genome evolution mainly in the context of host-microbe interactions both in health and in disease, where she applies evolutionary genomics methodologies to understand the causes of genome diversity. She was awarded a Fulbright fellowship to pursue her doctoral studies in the US. She completed her Ph.D. in Biology in 2006 on a joint program of the City University of New York and the American Museum of Natural History, on population genetics, phylogeography, and phylogenetics under the supervision of G. Barrowclough. She pursued her research at the lab of S.V. Edwards at Harvard University. After maternal leave she resumed her research at Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência, Portugal, for postdoctoral research at the Evolutionary Biology lab of I. Gordo and later at the Comparative Genomics lab of J. Pereira-Leal. From 2018-2019 she worked as an independent researcher at the Research Center for Chronic Diseases (CEDOC, Universidade Nova de Lisboa) collaborating with several research groups performing bioinformatic analyses using multi-omic approaches. On 2019 she joins the Yeast Genomics lab at the UCIBIO-FCT (Universidade Nova de Lisboa) as an independent researcher. She has authored 22 publications, being first and/or corresponding authors in 8, single author in 2, and last senior author in 2 publications. She has a total of 942 citations (Google Scholar) that results in a H index of 11. She is currently co- supervising 3 PhD. students and participates, or participated, as Research Fellow in 12 projects, where she has been responsible for performing or supervising the evolutionary bioinformatic analyses. She is interested in the application of evolutionary theory to understand the causes of human diseases, and she is has been very active on the field of Evolutionary Medicine. She introduced a new elective course on Evolutionary Medicine at the Integrated Masters of Medicine (NOVA Medical School, UNL), and organized a symposium on Evolution and Cancer at the Champalimaud Center in Lisbon. Since 2015 she is a member of the Education and Outreach Committee of the International Society for the Evolution, Medicine, and Public Health. Patrícia H. Brito is also deeply committed to teaching and mentorship. She has had the opportunity to teach both undergraduate and graduate level courses in several universities, both in Portugal (Universidade Nova de Lisboa, Universidade Católica Portuguesa, Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência) and in the US (Harvard University, City University of New York). She was involved in the planning, organization, and teaching of a new Master in Computational Biology offered at NOVA University.
