Eliana Fernandes graduated as a MSc in Chemical Engineering at the Faculty of Science and Technology from the University of Coimbra in 2019. Her thesis, entitled "Preparation of silica aerogel composites with recycled rubber for thermal insulation of buildings," was developed under the project Tyre 4 Build Ins and aimed to use recycled tyre rubber resin-bonded for building insulation systems towards energy efficiency. This thesis received the classification of 18/20 for the high-quality work and dedication. Since September 2019 she has participated as a research fellow in the FCT project "Monitoring neurometabolic markers in vivo using microelectrode-based biosensors" - (POCI-01-0145-FEDER-028261) at the Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Coimbra (UC) and in the group Redox Biology and Brain Sensing fom Center of Neuroscience and Cell Biology (CNC-UC). In her participation in this project, she learned and improved her skills regarding the fabrication of microelectrodes and how to perform their electrochemical characterization, evaluation, and optimization. She also gained expertise in performing electrochemical measurements (cyclic voltammetry, amperometry, impedance spectrum spectroscopy) and data analysis (Origin, GraphPad, Matlab). In the framework of this project, she has published 4 full research articles in peer-reviewed journals, including 1 as the first author (Molecules, IF. 4.41, Q2 journal in Chemistry, Multidisciplinary), and 3 as co-author in Q1 journals in areas of Chemistry (Analytical), Electrochemistry and Biochemistry & Molecular Biology (Redox Biology, IF. 11.80, Biosensors and Bioelectronics, IF. 10.61 and Sensors and Actuators B: Chemical IF. 7.34). She also presented posters in 1 national (Analítica2020) and 1 international (72nd Annual Meeting of the International Society of Electrochemistry) conference. During this period, she successfully completed the theoretical and practical course on Laboratory Animal Sciences designed according to the FELASA recommendations for Category B (carrying out procedures on animals). Notably, she has a Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (Level C1) that evidences her skills in the English language, and she actively participated in workshops and seminars that improved her knowledge in various areas and that empowered her with the tools needed to excel in her future academic and professional career. During her assignments, she actively contributed to the training of young professionals’ career, as shown by the mentoring/tutoring of 2 MSc thesis, and 8 BSc and MSc students through their extracurricular internships. In September 2021, she enrolled the Ph.D. programme in Pharmaceutical Sciences, Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Coimbra.
