António Ferreira graduated in Industrial Chemistry by the University of Beira Interior in 2001 and completed a PhD degree in Chemical and Biological Engineering by the Faculty of Engineering, University of Porto (FEUP) in 2008. Understanding the mechanisms of impurity inclusion into the crystal lattice, and the influence of impurities on crystal growth and dissolution rates, from a thermodynamic and kinetic point-of-view, were the main goals of his PhD research. These studies were performed at laboratory and pilot scale (Audubon Sugar Institute ¿ USA). After obtained his PhD degree, Ferreira started to work at CENTI (centre for nanotechnology and smart materials) as a researcher, where he increased his relationship with the industrial sector and consolidated his knowledge in project development. At the end of 2008 Ferreira started his Post-Doc in bioreactors optimization (until 2014). The main achievement of this study was an improved apparatus for mixing intensification, being ONE PATENT GRANTED and other under filed. In the period of 2009 to 2012, in parallel with his Post-Doc research, Ferreira worked as lecturer of chemistry and organic chemistry at FEUP. Since 2015 Ferreira is lecturer of chemistry and Research fellow (FCT investigator) at FEUP. During the last 5 years Ferreira was particularly involved in meso-oscillatory flow reactors (meso-OFR) optimization. This work results in two patents application and several projects and protocols established with the industry and research groups in the areas of continuous crystallization and multiphase reactors. Ferreira is Principal investigator of 3 projects (550 K euros) and team member in 4. Ferreira was deeply involved in a proposal submitted to Hovione (Portuguese pharmaceutical company) that results in a private investment of 1.2 M euros for process intensification where a technology based on meso-OFR is included. Ferreira published 5 patents (1 granted , 4 filed), 3 book chapters, 34 scientific articles in international peer review journals with an accumulated impact factor of 94 with over 630 citations and an h-index of 16. 17 papers were published in Q1 journals in chemical engineering field. Ferreira completed the supervision/co-supervision of 3 Post-Doc, 1 PhD student, 14 Master students, and 5 foreign students. Now is supervisor of 4 PhD students. Ferreira is also involved in the Brazilian CAPES-PrInt programme being responsible for the supervision of several PhD students at FEUP. During his career Ferreira got different recognitions and awards, like: best student award - University of Beira Interior (2001); PhD fellowship - FCT (2003); Post-Doc fellowship - FCT (2008, 2014); Frank Chapman Memorial Award - Sugar Ind. Tech. (2012); Nomination to the Technologic Innovation Award 2017 of U. Porto; Scientific recognition Award 2018 - FEUP. Actually, Ferreira is Research fellow and lecturer at FEUP being responsible for two research projects and several protocols established with the industry and research groups in the areas of crystallization and multiphase reactors (please visit the website www.meso-ofr.com for more information). Ferreira is also Vice-president of direction board of National Association of Science and Technology Researchers (ANICT). In 2019 Ferreira cofounded the company OFRTECH (www.ofrtech.com).
