António Ferreira graduated in Industrial Chemistry from the University of Beira Interior in 2001 and completed a PhD degree in Chemical and Biological Engineering from the Faculty of Engineering, University of Porto (FEUP) in 2008. The main goals of his PhD research were understanding the mechanisms of impurity inclusion into the crystal lattice and the influence of impurities on crystal growth and dissolution rates from a thermodynamic and kinetic point-of-view. These studies were performed on laboratory and pilot scales (Audubon Sugar Institute - USA). After obtaining his PhD degree, Ferreira started to work at CENTI (centre for nanotechnology and smart materials) as a researcher, increasing his relationship with the industrial sector and consolidating his project development knowledge. At the end of 2008, Ferreira started his Post-Doc in bioreactors optimization (until 2014). The main achievement of this work was an improved apparatus for mixing intensification (PATENT GRANTED). From 2009 to 2012, in parallel with his Post-Doc research, Ferreira worked as a lecturer of chemistry and organic chemistry at FEUP. Since 2015 Ferreira has been a Lecturer of Chemistry and a Assistant Researcher at FEUP being deeply involved in meso-oscillatory flow reactors (meso-OFR) optimization and its application in multiphase systems, such as continuous crystallization of active pharmaceutical ingredients (including proteins), microalgae cultivation, water treatment, liquid-liquid extraction, solids drying, among others (please visit the website www.meso-ofr.com for more information). Ferreira is an integrated member of ALiCE - Associate Laboratory in Chemical Engineering and LEPABE-FEUP in the research line of Supramolecular Assemblies. Ferreira was/is the Principal investigator of 4 scientific projects (1.2 M euros) and a team member in several (5, actually). Ferreira was co-responsible for an R&D proposal submitted to Hovione (a Portuguese pharmaceutical company), which result in a private investment of 600 k euros for process intensification. Ferreira published 5 patents (2 granted, 3 filed), 4 book chapters, 51 scientific articles in international peer-review journals with an accumulated impact factor (last year) of 205 with over 1050 citations and an h-index of 20. 34 papers were published in Q1 journals in the chemical engineering field. Ferreira is a reviewer of several international journals including the Chemical Engineering Journal (impact factor 2023 - IF 15.1). Ferreira completed the supervision/co-supervision of 5 Post-Doc, 3 PhD students, 11 Master students, and 4 foreign students. Now is the supervisor/co-supervisor of 5 PhD students. During his career, Ferreira received different recognitions and awards, like: the best student award - University of Beira Interior (2001); PhD fellowship - FCT (2003); Post-Doc fellowship - FCT (2008, 2014); Frank Chapman Memorial Award - Sugar Ind. Tech. (2012); Nomination to the Technologic Innovation Award 2017 of U. Porto; Scientific recognition Award 2018 - FEUP. Ferreira belong to the board of the National Association of Science and Technology Researchers (ANICT). In 2019 Ferreira co-founded the company OFRTECH (www.ofrtech.com).
