I am Assistant Researcher in Glycoscience at the Applied Molecular Biosciences Unit (UCIBIO) & Institute for Health and Bioeconomy (i4HB Associated Laboratory) at the Chemistry Department of NOVA School of Science and Technology (NOVA-FCT). Since 2022, I am leader of the (Bio)molecular structure and interactions by NMR lab (BioNMR) at UCIBIO/NOVA-FCT, together with its founder, Dr. Cabrita and since 2024 co-coordinator of the Drug Discovery & Therapies group of NOVAHealth from NOVA University. I graduated in Chemistry at Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade de Lisboa in 2003 and I obtained a joint PhD in 2009 in Chemistry (carbohydrate chemistry, Prize Best thesis 2009) at the Universidade de Lisboa and Université Pierre et Marie Currie Paris VI, under the supervision of Dr. Rauter and Dr. Sinaÿ. To diversify my background, I moved to Dr. Jiménez-Barbero's group at Centro Investigaciones Biológicas (CIB-CSIC/Madrid) for a post-doctoral experience (2009-2011). During that period, I became fascinated with NMR and its great power to unveil molecular recognition events involving glycans. In 2012, I returned to Portugal with a post-doctoral grant to initiate a research line dedicated to the molecular recognition of glycans at the BioNMR Lab, at NOVA FCT, led by Dr. Cabrita. In 2013, I was awarded my first FCT-funded project as PI, which allowed me to obtain the keystones (publications as corresponding author and invited communications) to succeed in being awarded in 2016 the highly competitive Investigator FCT contract (5-year contract Assistant Researcher, highest mark; rate of success < 10%). In January 2017, I established my independent research line in Structural Glycochemistry within the BioNMR Lab of UCIBIO, with a team initially composed of 1 PhD and 2 MSc students. Currently, I lead a larger team with 1 Junior Research (CEEC), 3 PhD candidates, 1 Research Fellow and 1 Senior Technicians. My group is compelled to the mission to decode, at the highest possible resolution and from the chemical perspective, how the glycocode is created by specific enzymes and how it is read and translated by different glycan-binding proteins. Our major ambition is to achieve the rational design and synthesis of molecules for development of robust glycan-based therapies. Over the last years, I secured my salary as Assistant Researcher, through Individual CEEC in 2020 (scored with 9.7/10; success rate < 12%) and permanent position at NOVA-FCT through the Institutional CEEC in 2022. As well, I attracted national funding as main PI (PTDC/QUI-OUT/2586/2020, PTDC/BIA-MIB/31028/2017 and IF/00780/2015) and as CO-PI (EXPL/QUI-OUT/0069/2021) in a total of 588K€. At the international level I was nominated as scientific representative of Grant Holder of a COST research network CA18132-GlycoNanoProbes (135K¿/year). Furthermore, I co-coordinate, together with my colleagues, Dr. Videira and Dr Palma, the GlycoTwinning European project focused on Building Networks to Excel Glycoscience (Total funding of 1,473 M€, funding UCIBIO/ FCT-NOVA of 750 K€). I secured my salary as Assistant Researcher, through Individual CEEC in 2020 (scored with 9.7/10; success rate < 12%) and through a permanent position (Institutional CEEC in 2022). During my career, I published 60 original research articles, reviews, and book chapters (11 as corresponding author) with a total of more than 1586 citations (h-index 21, scopus Feb 2024), besides several invited lectures and oral communications in international conferences. I am currently supervising 1 Junior Research (CEEC), 4 PhD candidates (3 as main supervisor), 1 Research Fellow and 3 Senior Technicians (1 as main supervisor). I have completed the supervision of 2 PhD, 1 PostDoc, 7 MSc, 6 research fellows, 4 scientific internships and 8 BSc. I have also been engaged in distinct commissions of trust, namely in the Individual Fellowships, Marie Sklodowska-Curie actions (MSCA).
