I graduated in Chemistry from Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade de Lisboa in 2003 and I received a PhD in Organic Chemistry in 2009 doing a joint PhD at the Universidade de Lisboa and Université Pierre et Marie Currie Paris VI in the field of carbohydrate chemistry. My PhD work was awarded with the prize for the best thesis in carbohydrate chemistry (Bernard Fournet - André Verbert Prix 2010) from the “Groupe Français des Glucides” (GFG). After my PhD and to improve my scientific knowledge and diverse my background, I decided to move to Dr. J. Jiménez-Barbero’s group at Centro Investigaciones Biológicas (CSIC/Madrid) for a post-doctoral experience (2009-2011). During that period, I became fascinated with NMR and how to exploit this technique to unveil molecular recognition events in distinct biological contexts, including in Glycosciences. In 2012 I returned to Portugal with an FCT Post-doctoral grant to initiate a new research line in the field of Glycosciences in the NMR research group led by E. Cabrita (UCIBIO FCT/NOVA). In 2013, I have obtained my first Principal Investigator project funding by Portuguese FCT to investigate interaction of glycan cancer antigens with selected antibodies and lectins. Our models provide structural insights to improve the rational-based design of glycan-based anticancer vaccines. The results were published in high impact scientific journals and further disseminated in several international conferences. This work marked my first steps towards independence and expertize in structural Glycosciences and I began to be directly approached for collaborations by research labs in EU and overseas. As a consequence, in Dec 2016, I was awarded the highly competitive and prestigious Investigator FCT contract scoring the highest mark in all evaluation steps and criterions. Since January 2017, I have been established an independent line of research applied to structural glycosciences, where I synergistically combine high-resolution NMR-based approaches with molecular modelling protocols, sustained by molecular biology and carbohydrate/chemoenzymatic synthesis to uncover key molecular mechanisms of glycan recognition and protein glycosylation in cancer-related systems. Recent highlights of my research team rely on the determination of the structural features behind the recognition of tumour-associated glycans and mimetics by immune-related lectins, as well as on the elucidation of the mechanism of mucins glycosylation by GalNAc-transferases enzymes. Over the last 3 years, I was also able to attract national and international funding as main coordinator of research projects (PTDC/BIA-MIB/31028/2017 and IF/00780/2015 in a total of 288K€) and as scientific representative of Grant Holder of a COST research network CA18132-GlycoNanoProbes (135K€/year), in the glycosciences field. I am currently supervise, 1 Post Doc, 3 PhD students and 1 MSc student and I have completed the supervision of 1 PhD (Best thesis Award 2020), 4 MSc students, 4 Research Fellow (under the scope of national projects) and 6 Research trainees. Finally, I have been also engaged in distinct commissions of trust, namely in the Individual Fellowships, Marie Sklodowska-Curie actions (MSCA). I interrupted my scientific activity twice (2013 and 2018) due to maternity leave. Finally, during my scientific career, I published 47 original research articles, reviews and book chapters with a total of more than 860 citations (h-index 17, scopus), besides 30 invited lectures and oral communications in international conferences.
