Ana Paiva is a Full Professor in the Department of Computer Engineering at Instituto Superior Técnico (IST) from the University of Lisbon and is also the Coordinator of GAIPS, Group of AI for People and Society at INESC-ID (see http://gaips.inesc-id.pt/gaips/). Her group investigates the creation of complex systems using an agent-based approach, with a special focus on social agents. Prof. Paiva’ s main research focuses on the problems and techniques for creating social agents that can simulate human-like behaviours, be transparent, natural and eventually, give the illusion of life. Over the years, she has addressed this problem by engineering agents that exhibit specific social capabilities, including emotions, personality, culture, non-verbal behaviour, empathy, collaboration, and others. She has contributed to the use of social agents within a wide range of application fields, in particular in the research areas of intelligent learning environments, social robotics, social simulation, serious games and entertainment. She has performed different management duties for the University: she was the Coordinator of the MSc and the PhD programmes in Information Systems and Computer Engineering at IST; member of the scientific council of the university and vice-president for the graduate affairs in her department. She served at the board of directors of the IFAAMAS, was as a member of the Agenda Council for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics in the World Economic Forum and member of the Scientific Advisory Board of Science Europe. She has promoted several national and international projects in the fields of social agents, having obtained of more than 4,7M Euros during the past 18 years. She has published over 250 articles, not only in journals such as the Journal of Autonomous Agents and Multiagent Systems; Autonomous Robots; Artificial Intelligence Journal; Theoretical Biology; International Journal of Social Robotics, but also several articles in books and proceeding of conferences such as AAMAS, HRI, AAAI, IJCAI, ECAI, IVA, RSS, IROS among others. She has contributed with new models for emotional and social intelligence in machines, placing the human in the loop when creating AI (artificial Intelligence) technology. Her manuscripts accumulate 8700+ citations (Google Scholar, GS) with an h-index of 46 (GS).
