Paula Alexandra Lopes

Main research lines: 1) Biology of fat deposition: Paula Alexandra Lopes is a lipid researcher whose career aims at identifying mechanism-based molecular targets for obesity therapeutic intervention using disease models (e.g. genetic and diet-induced), genomics and DNA-based approaches for lipid metabolism regulation and inflammation. The main focus stands on cellular and molecular mechanisms that regulate adipose cell fate, extending our mechanistic evaluation of biological systems from cellular to organism levels. The ultimate goal is to control gene expression and signaling networks involved in adipocytes (trans) differentiation and proliferation, based on genetic susceptibilities and cellular contexts, and to exploit novel therapeutic strategies to counteract obesity and associated metabolic complications, in particular insulin resistance and diabetes. 2) Development of nutritional strategies and bioactive lipids from animal origin: A related research line of Paula A. Lopes is on the development of nutritional strategies and bioactive lipids from animal origin, including fat-soluble antioxidant vitamins, n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, in particular eicosapentaenoic (EPA, 20:5n-3) and docosahexaenoic (DHA, 22:6n-3), and conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) isomers, that could reduce adiposity and inflammation or improve body fat partitioning and therefore, impact positively on consumers’ health. 3) Oxidative stress in health and disease: At the beginning of her career, Paula A. Lopes studied oxidative stress markers (antioxidant defense and oxidative injury) in healthy humans under the influence of age, sex, hormonal status for women and risk factors (e.g. dyslipidemia, hypertension and smoking) or having diagnosed atherosclerosis. A minor participation in ecotoxicology was achieved during her graduation period in which she studied redox balance markers in micromammals and fishes as sentinels of exposure to heavy metals contamination and derived oxidative stress.
