Catarina Miranda is presently a working as an Assistant Researcher at Center for Neuroscience and Cell Biology (CNC), the major partner of the Centre for Innovative Biomedicine and Biotechnology (CIBB), University of Coimbra (UC). Catarina graduated in Biology by the UC in 2003 and completed her Master's degree in Cellular Biology from UC in 2005, under the theme "Expression of Progenitor Adult Stem Cell Markers in the Male Germ Epithelium", which was performed in the Department of Genetics, Faculty of Medicine, University of Porto (UP). As result of this work, she was co-author in two manuscripts in the field of Germinal Stem Cells published in international scientific journals: 1) Sá R, Miranda C, et al., 2013, Systems Biol Rep Med; 2) Sá R, Miranda C, et al, 2012, Microsc Microanal. Since then, Catarina Miranda has been developing research within the field of Neurosciences, namely Stem Cell Therapy in neurodegenerative disorders. She took her PhD degree in Biomedical Sciences in UP. During that time, she was awarded with a Fellowship for training abroad to participate in the Multipotent Adult Progenitor Cell training program (Stem Cell Institute, Univ. of Minnesota, USA). She performed the thesis research work at the Institute of Molecular and Cellular Biology of Porto, in the group of Mónica Sousa, on the field of "Nervous System Regeneration with Mesenchymal Stromal Cells (MSC)". Catarina became expert in this subject and produced substantial amount of work that resulted in several manuscripts as first author, published in the journals Stem Cells (Miranda et al., 2011), Neurobiology of Disease (Teixeira*, Miranda* et al., 2014; *equal contribution), and Cell Transplantation: The Regenerative Medicine Journal (Miranda et al., 2013; Miranda et al., 2014). In May of 2012 Catarina joined Luis Pereira de Almeida's Lab from Vectors and Gene Therapy group at CNC as a postdoctoral researcher and was recently hired as an Assistant researcher (January 2019), where she has been developing a project on MSCs for Therapy of Machado-Joseph Disease. This project has huge clinical relevance for therapy of Machado-Joseph disease (MJD) as well as other spinocerebellar ataxias since this treatment is already under clinical investigation. Catarina accomplished very promising results, showing that a repeated treatment with MSC can promote neuroprotective effects and sustained improvements in MJD mouse models and reported biomarkers to follow treatment successful (Miranda et al., 2018, Molecular Therapy). Catarina has been collaborating with people from different multidisciplinary fields (58 collaborators in co-authorship in scientific works, e.g., Lobo et al, 2020) and participated in well recognized scientific meetings (either national or international), revealing the high quality of the work she has been developing. Catarina has substantial expertise on the field of MSC, which coupled to the expertise of the group in Machado-Joseph disease, creates unique conditions for the success of her project. During her Post-doc she had a break due to Maternity Leave (August 2013 - January 2014). Catarina has now 14 ISI indexed outputs, 5 from which in Q1 (1 above 95%), 6 as first author (with an average IF of 5.7/article), 2 as second author, a book chapter (third author), and 2 as last author, with an accumulated IF=63.53, 133 citations (Google Scholar), h index = 6, and 3 papers in conference proceedings. She performed 4 oral communications by invitation, 28 oral communications and 38 posters in national/international meetings and reviewed 5 manuscripts. Overall, her work has won 6 research grants and several prizes. Catarina has supervised a total of 4 Master students, 11 Lab Rotations (2 PhD, 5 Master and 4 undergraduate students) and is presently supervising a PhD student awarded with an FCT fellowship and 2 Master students. Finally, Catarina participated/is participating in 12 R&D projects and in several outreach activities.
