Catarina O. Miranda (COM) graduated in Biology in 2003 (Univ. of Coimbra, UC, Portugal) and completed her master’s in Cellular Biology in 2005 (UC). She was co-author in two manuscripts and performed 4 communications. After that, she was awarded by Gulbenkian Institute with a Fellowship for training abroad (Stem Cell Institute, Univ. of Minnesota, USA) to perform an international stay. She moved back to Portugal to take her PhD degree in Biomedical Sciences (Univ. of Porto, Portugal), supported by a highly competitive FCT fellowship (SFRH/BD/29768/2006), to investigate the therapeutic potential of Mesenchymal Stromal Cells (MSC) to promote peripheral nervous system regeneration in leukodystrophies. She published 4 papers (as 1st author/co-author) in prestigious peer-reviewed journals (e.g., Stem Cells, Neurobiology of Disease) and made 21 communications. Due to her outstanding academic path, she received 4 prizes, and had a cover paper in Stem Cells. In April 2011, she was awarded with a FCT fellowship to work in the project “Dissecting nerve regeneration and the neuritogenic activity of TTR” (PTDC/SAU-NMC/116512/2010). In May 2012, she moved to Coimbra to Luis Almeida’s Lab at CNC and engaged another FCT fellowship (PTDC/SAU-NMC/116512/2010) to participate in a project aiming at reprogramming fibroblast from SCA3 patients into iPSC-induced neurons. In February 2013, she started a post-doc supported by a highly competitive fellowship (SFRH/BPD/87732/2012, FCT). She implemented a novel research field of MSC as a therapeutic tool for SCA3 and brought substantial know-how to the research group, focused on SCA3. During her Post-doc, she had a break due to Maternity Leave (August 2013 - January 2014). In 2019, COM was hired as a Researcher at Center for Neuroscience and Cell Biology (CNC), under the DL-57/2016 scientific employment, where she pursued this line of investigation. During all her career path she developed several national and international collaborations, driving multidisciplinary research, which culminated in relevant scientific outputs. So far, COM published a total of 14 peer-reviewed articles with and average IF=6.9, (from which 12 (86%) in Q1), a book chapter, and 4 abstracts with DOI, and over 80 communications (8 by invitation), with an accumulated total IF=96.55, with 205 citations; h-index=9 (Google Scholar). From these publications, she is first author of 8 of publications, 2 of them published in top-tier journals (Mol Ther, doi: 10.1016/j.ymthe.2018.07.007; Acta Neurop Commun, doi: 10.1186/s40478-020-00955-0), and senior (last/corresponding) author of 4 papers, one also published in a top-tier journal (Acta Neuropathol Commun, doi: 10.1186/s40478-022-01329-4). Recently, she was invited to review 11 papers and to be jury member of MSc Theses, denoting her scientific credibility. COM has been/is supervising several students (12 internships, 6 MSc and 1 PhD student), has taught in PhD/MSc courses. As PI, COM was recently awarded with an FCT grant (2022.04788.PTDC, 50K € grant), a Seed Money Award for Interdisciplinary Research (funded by iiiUC and Santander, 20K € grant) and an Interstellar Initiative Early Career Scientist Award, by the Japan Agency for Medical Research (AMED) and The New York Academy of Sciences (NYAS) (20K € grant), with a total amount received to lead research projects of 91k€. Besides, she participated in 9 R&D other projects, and is presently participating on 2 as team member, with a total amount of received to participate/lead research projects of 1253k€. She was also recently awarded by Dana-FENS (Brain Awareness Week grant, 1k €) to implement a group of actions (including a dance performance) called “Less Rare” to disseminate the disease knowledge and is leading other science communications events. COM is presently Representative of the Post-Docs (2021-2023) from CIBB and is leading the new Improving Accessibility Working Group at ALBA Network.
