I am a mathematical population geneticist whose main focus of research is on methodologies of improvement in the analysis of large-scale genomic studies such as genome-wide association, fine-mapping studies, admixture mapping, genetics of mixed ancestry populations and analyzing genome wide patterns of variation within and between species to address fundamental questions in biology, anthropology, and medicine. I lead the Medical Population Genetics and Genetics Epidemiology Group at the University of Cape Town (UCT), where I run a team of ~ 25 people, including staff, Postdocs, Honours, MSc and PhD students and an average of 3 graduated students per year in past 5 years. I am the director of the medical sciences BSc Honours program in Human Genetics and Forensic Genetics in the division of Human Genetics, Department of Pathology at the UCT Faculty of Health Sciences, consisting of several graduate students across Africa and international. My research group has a focus on developing and apply statistical and computational methods to understand the genetic architecture of diseases. I have organized various workshops and co-organized events on Big Data, Analytics and Machine Intelligence and spoken at International events on these topics. I have a record of accomplishment in designing and applying statistical and health prediction methods to large-scale omics data sets. I have developed various genomics tools for post genome-wide association (such as ancGWAS22, PROXYANC23), risk prediction and genomics simulations (FractalSIM24), Gene Ontology semantic similarity-based functional analysis tool (A-DaGO-Fun25), and so forth. I am Co-Investigator of the NIH funded project, H3ABioNet, a pan-African bioinformatics network for H3Africa consisting of 28 institutions in 16 African countries. The network is developing bioinformatics capacity to enable genomics research. I am also Co-Investigator of the NIH funded project, Hearing Impairment Genetics Studies in Africa (HI-GENES Africa) and Bioinformatics expert consultant of a Sickle cell Disease Data Coordinating Centre to coordinate the management of sickle cell disease research data. Through these networks my team has gained extensive experience in data management and analysis. I contributed to the development of standards for phenotype data for cohort studies, with associated data dictionaries, as well as data harmonization across multiple projects. I have implemented workflows for genomic data analysis and implement FAIR principles to facilitate reproducible science. I contributed to various educational research papers and the development of the Knowledge Transfer Programme (KTP) system, an optimal strategy and matchmaking system (knowledge seekers and experts) to efficiently train and transfer "omics" knowledge in Africa, resulting in a first author paper entitled "¿Broadband¿ Bioinformatics skills transfer with the Knowledge Transfer Programme (KTP): educational model for upliftment and sustainable development. My contributions to science have been in the field of computational statistical genetics and population genetics, where I have designed and applied computational methods for identifying genetic associations and deriving risk prediction in population-scale datasets, dissecting the genetics of diseases and traits in population cohorts.
