Adolfo Cartaxo nasceu em Montemor-o-Novo, Portugal. Licenciou-se em Engenharia Electrotécnica e de Computadores pelo Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), Universidade Técnica de Lisboa, em 1985. Obteve os graus de Mestre e Doutor em Engenharia Electrotécnica e de Computadores, no IST. A tese de doutoramento tratou da optimização do circuito de sincronismo em comunicações ópticas com detecção directa. Em Fevereiro de 2005, obteve a Agregação em Engenharia Electrotécnica e de Computadores, no IST. Em 1985, entrou para o Departamento de Engenharia Electrotécnica e de Computadores do IST como Assistente Estagiário. Em 1992, passou a Professor Auxiliar e foi promovido a Professor Associado em Janeiro de 2002. Em Setembro de 2016, entrou para o Departamento de Ciências e Tecnologias da Informação do ISCTE - Instituto Universitário de Lisboa como Professor Catedrático. Ao longo destes anos, leccionou e foi responsável de várias disciplinas de Telecomunicações, tendo redigido apresentações e / ou textos pedagógicos para a maior parte das disciplinas de que foi responsável. Foi orientador de 9 dissertações de Mestrado pré-Bolonha (das quais duas em co-orientação), 31 dissertações de Mestrado pós-Bolonha (das quais quinze em co-orientação) e 10 teses de Doutoramento já concluídas (das quais quatro em co-orientação), e é actualmente orientador de 3 teses de Doutoramento (em co-orientação) e de 1 dissertação de Mestrado (em co-orientação). Em 1993, entrou como investigador para o Grupo de Comunicações Ópticas (CO) do pólo de Lisboa do Instituto de Telecomunicações (IT) onde é actualmente investigador sénior e, desde Janeiro de 2002, membro da Comissão Coordenadora Nacional da Área de CO. Foi investigador responsável pela participação do IST ou pólo de Lisboa do IT em nove projectos europeus de investigação e desenvolvimento na área das telecomunicações por fibra óptica. Foi investigador responsável por seis projectos nacionais, e três projectos internos do IT. Foi investigador responsável pela participação do IST-IT em dois projectos de cooperação com o Brasil na área das redes ópticas. Tem sido auditor e avaliador técnico de projectos dos programas europeus "Advanced Communications Technologies and Services: european RTD" e "Information Society Technologies". Tem sido revisor regular das seguintes publicações internacionais: Optics Express, IEEE/OSA Journal of Lightwave Technology, IEEE Photonics Technology Letters, IEEE Transactions on Communications, Optics Letters e IEEE Photonics Journal. É membro sénior da IEEE Laser and Electro-Optics Society desde Novembro de 2002. É autor ou co-autor de 140 artigos em revistas científicas internacionais (18 como primeiro autor) e mais de 190 comunicações em conferências internacionais. É co-autor de duas patentes. Os seus principais interesses de investigação são sistemas e redes de telecomunicações por fibra óptica.

2018/01/01 - 2019/12/31 The responsabilities of the coordinator of Master's Degree in Telecommunications and Computer Engineering (METI) were i) the day-to-day management of the course, ii) chair of the jury for almost all the master's dissertations, iii) ranking of candidates in all the application phases for the METI, usually more than 60 candidates; iv) writing of the report submitted to the Higher Education Assessment and Accreditation Agency (A3ES) for the purpose of accrediting METI for a period of six years, which was granted.

2013/01/01 - 2014/12/31 The main activities of the coordination of the integrated EEC master degree were: i) resolving the MEEC's current problems, e.g. concerning enrolment in curricular units, dissertations and choices of areas of specialisation and students' curricular units, which exceeded 1500, ii) managing the process of calling for proposals, applications and the awarding of Master's dissertations, iii) analysing applications for the 2nd cycle, course changes, transfers, and secondary and higher education courses, and iv) the experimental internship programme.
