Dr. Maria Joana Ferreira da Silva is currently an FCT researcher (CEECIND/01937/2017, 2019-2025) and before was an FCT-funded postdoctoral researcher (SFRH/BPD/88496/2012, 2013-2019, interrupted five months for maternity leave). Research area in Biological Anthropology is the relationship between human and non-human primates and the impact of anthropogenic activities on African primates i) diversity, ii) evolution, iii) distribution, iv) population structure and gene flow, and v) conservation. She uses and combines methods from several disciplines (e.g., social, population genetics and genomics, meta-barcoding and spatial ecology) to generate science-based information on the impact of human activities on populations and the processes by which non-human primates conservation is affected. She has been investigating several threatened African primates (Pan troglodytes verus, Colobus polykomos, Piliocolobus badius temminckii, Papio sp., Cercocebus sp.) in Guinea-Bissau, Sierra Leone, Tanzania, Mauritania and Mozambique. She is very experienced in carrying-out field-work in Africa. She has published on themes such as human perceptions of non-human primates, population genetics and determinants of gene flow across large scales, illegal wildlife trafficking and environmental crimes, primate behavioural adaptations, and hybridization and the use of non-human primates as model species to investigate human evolution. From 2014 to 2021, MJFS published 13 peer-reviewed papers and three book chapters (reaching 21 publications in total from 2012; h index = 10, 266 citations in 10th March 2021). She delivered 50 communications in scientific/outreach meetings (22 as an invited keynote speaker). During her postdoctoral experience, she was awarded a total of 210 k euros from national and international funding agencies (e.g. FCT, The Born Free Foundation, The Mohamed bin Zayed Species Conservation Fund). She was the PI of the PRIMACTION project (2015-2019), the co-PI of FCT-funded PRIMATOMICS project (2016-2019) and co-researcher in other eight funded research projects. She is an invited lecturer on Primatology/Conservation Genetics in Universities at Portugal, UK, Guinea-Bissau and Mozambique. She currently co-supervises six PhD students and has co-supervised ten postgraduate students in the past six years from different Universities (Italy, Chile and UK and Portugal). She is as IUCN invited-assessor of Papio papio, and Piliocolobus badius and Piliocolobus badius spp. temminckii and is a co-author in the Regional Action plan for Cercocebys atys and Pan troglodytes verus. She is recognized as a specialist in primate conservation genetics and has been invited to deliver plenary talks at experts’ symposiums, such as the international symposium Frontiers of Baboon Research (Germany, 2017) and the Wenner-Gren Foundation workshop (Mozambique, 2019). She is part of the TROPBIO research group in CIBIO, investigating tropical ecosystems, and a senior researcher of the Paleo Primate Project, an interdisciplinary and international project investigating human evolution at Gorongosa and Urema Rift region, Mozambique. She is an invited evaluator for grants awarded by the International Society of Primatology. She is the president of the Portuguese Primatology Association.
