Dr. Fátima Brandão is a toxicologist and biomedical researcher working in predictive and mechanistic toxicology, focusing on nanomaterial safety and human-relevant in vitro models for biomedical applications. She holds a BSc in Biology and an MSc in Applied Biology – Toxicology and Ecotoxicology from the University of Aveiro and completed her PhD in Biomedical Sciences (2025) at ICBAS – University of Porto, in collaboration with INSA, the University of A Coruña, and EPIUnit. Her doctoral research investigated how physicochemical properties of amorphous silica nanomaterials influence pulmonary biological responses, using multiparametric in vitro approaches integrating cytotoxicity, oxidative stress, genotoxicity, and gene expression analyses. Her work contributed to nanomaterial hazard assessment strategies aligned with safe-by-design and 3Rs principles. She participated in several competitive projects (NanoToxClass, CeraSafe, NanoLegaTox, NanoBioBarriers) and completed international research and specialised training in Spain and Italy. She also gained industry experience in medical device regulatory toxicology, contributing to ISO 10993 and MDR-compliant biological evaluations. Currently, she is a junior researcher at the University of Aveiro within the ORTHO-ALLO-UNION project, developing advanced in vitro approaches for regenerative medicine. She has authored peer-reviewed publications (7 first author) and received multiple international awards.
