My name is Miguel Calvário, I’m an engineer whose academic education began at the Polytechnic Institute of Setúbal, where I earned my bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering (Production) in 2008. I later specialized in Design and Production during my master’s degree in mechanical engineering at the Nova University Lisbon, which I completed in 2010. In 2025 I obtained a PhD degree in Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering from Institituto Superior Técnico. Throughout my academic career, I have been a dedicated student, earning an award during the bachelor, a PhD scholarship funded by FCT and a PhD classification of Pass with Distinction. I began my professional career in 2011, with an initial period in industry (mostly in an international company) giving me knowledge, leadership and practical skills, which have been useful throughout my career of researcher. I am an engineer with a passion for the development of renewable energy technologies (master and PhD thesis dedicated to this topic), which encouraged me to join the research activity in the Centre for Marine Technology and Ocean Engineering (CENTEC) in 2013. My research work has focused on wave energy: a promising clean, modern and sustainable energy resource. My initial research at CENTEC focused on the power take-off systems (PTO), specifically addressing the oil-hydraulic technology and mechanical linkages. I conducted research on optimizing mechanical linkage geometry and PTO control parameters to maximize the amount of harvested power. Moreover, I investigated the coupling of the PTO with gearboxes and flywheels. Furthermore, my research also focused on oscillating wave surge converters, including the optimization of both control parameters and mechanical linkages. For the past six years, my research work was focused on the structural assessment of WECs made of composite materials, as detailed in the PhD thesis. Research was carried out on the investigation of affordable glass fibre reinforced polymers for point absorber WECs, focusing on their mechanical strength for a wide range of criteria (tensile, flexural, impact, buckling and fracture) in both dry and aged conditions. In addition, I conducted numerical and experimental studies on the bottom wave slamming of axisymmetric point absorbers specifically addressing material deformation - an area which is still not widely covered in the literature. I have been an invited teacher in 2024 and 2025 for the Ships in Composite Materials course at Instituto Superior Técnico. I dedicated significant effort to designing laboratory classes and projects that require the manufacturing and testing of composite structures. The research work conducted on PTO systems and the structural assessment of WECs resulted in the publication of various journal papers, conference papers and book chapters. Collaboration is central to my process, and I have worked alongside numerous co-authors on various scientific publications. My research focuses primarily on wave energy converters, finite element analysis, optimization, wave slamming and composite materials.
