I have completed my PhD in Physics in 2003 at the University of Manchester, UK, with the age of 25, and was subsequently a post-doctoral researcher at the Universities of Pittsburgh, USA and Lisbon, Portugal. My basic formation is in phase separation dynamics in the context of Soft Condensed Matter Physics. During my PhD I applied analytical and computational techniques to characterise the fluctuations of interfaces during coarsening under shear, and investigated metastable states in Ising-like models that present slow dynamics akin to spin-glasses. Afterwards, in Pittsburgh, I applied the knowledge gathered during my PhD to the study of phase separation in polymeric mixtures. Here, I also focused on studying the mechanics of these heterogeneous mixtures and the organisation of complex hierarchical structures in photo-reactive chemical blends. This work in particular was referred as highlight in the editor's choice section of Science Magazine. However, I wanted to apply my background in Physics and computational modelling to Biology, and I got that opportunity during my postdoctoral studies at Lisbon University. During this stay, I focused on the nucleation dynamics of the native state in protein folding. In particular I studied how the structure and complexity of the native state of proteins determine their folding pathway. This work was featured in the highlights section of Protein Science magazine. In February 2008 I started my appointment at the University of Coimbra (with a Ciência 2007 contract) as an independent researcher. Since that date I have been developing a line of research that takes advantage of my know-how in theoretical and computational Soft Condensed Matter Physics to describe biological systems. I have focused my work in cell movement, tumor growth, blood vessel growth, and tissue irrigation. In these research topics I received the Estímulo à Investigação prize from Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian (given to the best two projects in physics written by young researchers) with the project The Role of Surface Morphology on Tumor Growth. In 2013 I saw my contract upgraded to an FCT Researcher, at the Principal Researcher level, where I came out in the top 7% of the 1150 researchers that applied. In 2018 I became a tenure track Assistant Professor in the Department of Physics of the University of Coimbra. Recently I have developed strong collaborations with experimental and theoretical groups alike to analyse the dynamics of biological systems. From these collaborations resulted high impact collaborative works e.g. the ones published in Redox Biology, Communications Biology, and in Journal of Controlled Release. In 2022 and 2024 my research group was chosen as host for the New Scientific Talents in Physics of Gulbenkian Foundation. In conclusion, my research work has been carried out in Physics, and in particular in using tools of Soft Condensed Matter Physics to describe biological systems. Moreover, I coordinate and participate in interdisciplinary projects, where the tools we develop are tested experimentally in the lab. Importantly I am a main proponent, and the Physics Department coordinator, of the new Master in Computational Biology created in 2020/2021 at the University of Coimbra. I also engage actively in disseminating the results of my research to the general public.

2008 - Atual For the last 16 years I teach and organize the Quark! School in Physics held at the Department of Physics of the University of Coimbra for the best and brightest high school students in the country; it also offers preparation for the International Physics Olympiad. I have a strong involvement with the Quark! school typically teaching every monthly session, and often more than one topic. I am one of the coordinators of the Quark! school since 2016. (2008)
2008 - Atual Yearly two one-week intensive sets of experimental and theoretical classes tailored to prepare the selected students for the International and Ibero-American Physics Olympiads. I coordinate the organization of these preparation weeks since 2014, and participate since 2008. (2008)
2015 - 2024 Coordination and organization of the seven international Summer Schools in Computational Biology - From Molecules to Tissues. One and a half week summer school with between 24 and 35 students from different backgrounds (cell biologists, biochemists, biomedical engineers, chemists, physicists and mathematicians). Within these schools I also lectured and designed a one-day introductory level tutorial on Mathematical Models of Age Related Diseases and a two-day tutorial on Tools for Modeling Biological Systems. 2011 - Atual Leader of the team representing Portugal at the International Physics Olympiad (11 events), Ibero-American Physics Olympiads (7 events) and European Physics Olympiads (2 events). It involves discussing, translating and correcting exams during a week period. It also permits to engage in fruitful discussions with colleagues from over 80 other nations on the scientific topics of the problems and on strategies to better prepare our students.
