El Khalil Cherif

I am El Khalil Cherif, one of the winners of the FCT CEEC Individual, 7th Edition (2025), and currently Investigador Júnior at IST-ID specializing in using machine learning with Remote Sensing, Geographical Information System, Ocean, Land and environmental science data. I hold a PhD in Environment and Remote Sensing-Science and Technology from Abd Elmalek Essaadi University, Faculty of Science and Technology in 2019 and recently a Master in Sustainable Blue Growth - Blue Economy from University of Trieste, Italy in 2021. I held several research positions. From March 2020 to March 2021, I was a postdoctoral researcher at the National Institute of Biology in Piran, Slovenia. My research centered on the impact of climate change on coastal water quality, specifically focusing on validating and improving Sentinel-3 Chlorophyll-a estimation using OLCI in the shallow coastal waters of the Gulf of Trieste, Mediterranean Sea. Subsequently, from April 2021 to February 2023, I worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the Institute for Systems and Robotics in Lisbon, Portugal. As part of the FIREFRONT project, I delved into methods for mapping fire detections from drones. This role also involved co-supervising MSc and PhD students, as well as contributing to report preparation and dissemination activities. In parallel, from October 2022 to October 2023, I held a part-time remote position as a Junior Researcher at the National Institute of Oceanography and Applied Geophysics (OGS-CGN) in Trieste, Italy. My work focused on validating and managing data on marine pollutants within the Oceanography Research Section. From February 2023 to March 2025 I leaded the task of “Remote sensing and AI” as a Junior Researcher in the frame of SILVANUS project at the Marine, Environment and Technology Centre (MARTEC) at Instituto Superior Técnico, University of Lisbon. Additionally, I maintain an external collaboration with the Department of Geosciences, Environment and Spatial Planning at the Faculty of Sciences, University of Porto from 01/01/2020. I am also a visiting professor at the National School of Applied Sciences of Al-Hoceima (ENSA) at Abdelmalek Essaâdi University-Morocco, where I teach the history of water to first-year engineering students for the 2024-2025 academic year. In parallel, I co-supervise 4 doctoral theses within the Chemistry Department of the Faculty of Sciences and Technologies of Tangier and at the Institute of Systems and Robotics (ISR). 2024–2025: I led a COP30 cropland emissions pilot funded by WattTime / Climate TRACE (USA), the finding presented in the COP30 by Al Gore. I have extensive experience in remote sensing and GIS, having worked on fires projects such as FireFront and currently the Silvanus projects. I have a strong publication record, having published over 36 papers and articles (H-index of 14, with over 646 citations since 2019), authored two theses, and one advocacy toolkit, and presented at over 20 national and international conferences. I have also completed 5 internships in national and international laboratories and have participated in over 20 training programs and workshops. I have a strong international network, having collaborated on research articles with teams from Portugal, Spain, Italy, and Slovenia. I am a reviewer for several MDPI journals, have reviewed over 100 papers and have recently been invited to be a Guest Editor for the Journal "Remote Sensing" of MDPI (IF : 4.2, ISSN 2072-4292) for the first and second edition of the Special Issue "Image Analysis for Forest Environmental Monitoring". I specialize in using remote sensing for climate change, environmental, and disaster assessment. I've published papers in the field of climate change and presented at COP27, COP28, COP29, COP30 as party youth negotiator. I currently lead the marine and coastal environmental association
