Sónia Duarte Barroso

Sónia Barroso obtained her PhD in Chemistry from Instituto Superior Técnico, University of Lisbon (IST-UL), Portugal, in 2010. She is an experienced chemist with skills within organic, inorganic and organometallic and analytical chemistry. Since 2018, she is a researcher at MARE/ARNET, ESTM, Instituto Politécnico de Leiria, working in the valorization of marine resources for application in human nutrition. Her current research includes: optimization of processes for the extraction and characterization of bioactive compounds from seaweed and other marine resources; innovative food products formulation with the incorporation of marine resources; strategies to improve shelf-life of seafood/seafood-based products, using seaweed extracts with antioxidant/antimicrobial properties; and, more recently, study of the digestibility of food ingredient/matrix compounds. She has supervised/co-supervised 10 MSc theses, mentored several grant holders and Erasmus students, acted as examiner in MSc and PhD defences, and served on a PhD thesis monitoring committee. Her scientific output comprises 57 peer-reviewed articles in international journals (scopus h-index 20), 2 book chapters and 1 article in a national magazine. She has actively disseminated her work through oral and poster presentations at national and international conferences. She participated in several research projects (over 10) as team member, collaborator or co-PI and, more recently, as PI of an FCT-funded IC&DT co-promotion project. She has also been involved in scientific organization, peer review, special issue editorship, and science dissemination activities, and received recognition for innovation and entrepreneurship (2 prizes and 1 honourable mention).
