Fernando Ferreira is graduated in Veterinary Medicine (2001) and obtained his PhD degree in Veterinary Sciences at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (2008), University of Lisbon. During his PhD, he characterized the functional role and the dynamics of cellular Topoisomerases in replication of genomes, and explored the interaction between the Williams syndrome transcription factor and PCNA in DNA replication foci. In 2008, Fernando Ferreira was awarded by the Prize Young Researchers (UTL/Caixa Geral de Depósitos) due to the merit of published scientific manuscripts. Since 2009, he works on the molecular characterization of feline mammary carcinoma (FMC) aiming to discover diagnostic biomarkers and novel molecular targets for precision chemotherapy and immunotherapy, under the financial support of national research projects. The main discoveries in this field were the validation of a molecular classification system for FMC, uncover the importance of serum HER2 as a diagnostic biomarker, characterize the antitumoral effects of anti-HER2 agents, describe the pathological and clinical implications of the tumor-infiltrating immune cells and evaluate the role of several immunocheckpoints in the tumor microenvironment on different FMC molecular subtypes. In parallel, Fernando Ferreira is also working in the Infectious Disease Laboratory of FMV, collaborating with an international highly diversified network of research labs in order to develop cutting-edge projects aiming to discovery efficient antivirals and develop rational vaccine candidates against African swine fever virus (ASFV) with DIVA features. Currently, African Swine Fever is present in the 5 continents, being the most serious disease threatening the pig industry, since no vaccine or antiviral treatment is available. Ongoing studies allow to better understand host cell-African swine fever virus (ASFV) interactions through functional studies on biological activity of several ASFV proteins involved in viral genome replication, in the identification of immunodominant-B cell antigens, providing a solid rational to design novel antiviral molecules and vaccine prototypes. In 2019, Fernando Ferreira was awarded by the Prize "Universidade de Lisboa/Caixa Geral de Depósitos". After his PhD, Fernando Ferreira published over 50 papers in international peer review journals (44 as 1st author or last author, h-index=22, citations=1183), supervised 9 PhD students (7 completed), 40 MSc thesis and 3 Post-Doc researchers. PI of several nacional research projects on veterinary oncology and virology, F Ferreira had participate as researcher in 3 European projects on African Swine Fever Virus (ASFRISK, ASFSTOP, VACDIVA). He is also author of oral communications in more than 50 international meetings, 20 national meetings and poster presentations in other 35 international scientific meetings. He is a reviewer for many international scientific journals, including Nature Communications, Scientific Reports, PLOS pathogens, Cancers, Biomedicines and Vaccines. Between 2016 and 2022 was the President of the Portuguese Society of Veterinary Sciences and since 2023, F Ferreira holds the position of the associate professor at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Lisbon, being involved in teaching activities in the subjects of Anatomy and Cell Culture.
