Sylvia Rijmer is a dance educator, interdisciplinary and multimodal researcher, and scholar. She holds a BFA from The Juilliard School, and an MA in Dance Teaching and a Specialist Title from the Superior School of Dance (Lisbon Polytechnic Institute). She is currently Adjunct Professor of Dance Techniques at the Superior School of Dance where she teaches Classical Dance, American and Portuguese Repertoire and Choreography in the Bachelor of Dance programme and teaches Methodologies and Didactics of Classical Dance II, as well as supervising students in the Master’s programmes in Dance Teaching and in Choreographic Creation and Professional Practices. As a dance researcher, Sylvia is working at the intersection of dance, science, technology, and machine learning. Using an invented improvisational task-based method, the Body Logic Method and technology (VR, Motion Capture, AI), she explores human cognition, inherited habit, and creative decision-making to encounter alternative possibilities for choreographic thinking and making with scientists and dance artists. She is a recipient of the IDI&CA2023 funding for her ongoing research in Dance and AI entitled: Bodily Futures: Dance and AI, in collaboration with IADE - Creative University in Lisbon, developing the research with a computer scientist and a cognitive linguist. Her work has been shared at the SOBA LAB at Glasgow University, LASEEB Lab and LarSyS 2024 Annual meeting at Técnico / University of Lisbon; The Leverhulme Center, at Cambridge University; CFCUL - Center of Philosophy of Science at University of Lisbon; and the Choreographic Coding Lab (CCL) at Mainz University, to name a few.
