Carlos A. Martins Gomes completed the Bachelor and Master in Biochemistry at the University of Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro. He is currently a researcher and PhD student in the Centre for the Research and Technology of Agro-Environmental and Biological Sciences (CITAB-UTAD), working in the Biochemistry and Cell Biology laboratory, and also in the Food and Wine Chemistry Laboratory (CQ-VR, UTAD). Carlos has published various research articles in scientific journals, as well as book chapters, and participated in several National and International congresses. As a Master Student Fellow, he has been involved in 4 projects related to food science, biochemistry, cell biology, and nanotechnology. Carlos' main field of study is the valorization of medicinal and aromatic plants as functional foods, studying their composition and correlating its effect with their bioactivities, with the main focus on anti-proliferative activities, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and interactions with related signaling pathways in cell line models. Besides aromatic plant extracts, Carlos also has skills in analyzing other food matrices and in the effect of nanoparticles in human cell lines. The expertise consists of extraction, purification, and isolation of phytochemicals, chromatography analyses of food/beverages (Liquid, gas, and ion chromatography), and the study of bioactivities by diverse techniques involving cell line models such as flow cytometry, western blot, immunocytochemistry or fluorescence microscopy. Carlos' investigation interests are the absorption, internalization, and metabolism of phytochemicals in cell models; understanding their interaction with cells to potentiate their industrial applications; developing new methods to track phytochemicals and their sub-products in biological systems; interactions with receptors, channels, permeabilization, and specific metabolic pathways modulation; development of new pharmaceutical formulations (based on natural components and nanoparticles) to the treatment/prevention of prominent diseases (cancer, neurological degeneration, chronic inflammatory disorders), delivery and effect enhancement of existing drugs by natural products; identify and extract new phytochemicals from vegetal material, with potent applications as functional foods. The main areas of activity are biochemistry and cell biology, functional foods, analytical chemistry, nanotechnology, and food science.
