Ângela Inácio is a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Center for Neuroscience and Cell Biology (CNC-UC), University of Coimbra, Portugal. She graduated in Biology from the University of Coimbra in 2007 and obtained a PhD in Biosciences from the same University in 2013. During her PhD, she conducted research on the potential use of surfactants in the prophylaxis of sexually transmitted infections. She was a postdoctoral fellow at the Interdisciplinary Centre for Marine and Environmental Research (CIIMAR), University of Porto, where she worked on the antibacterial and antifungal screening of compounds isolated from marine organisms. The focus of her research included antimicrobial resistance mechanisms and the transfer of multi-drug-resistant genes between intermingled ecological niches. In her postdoctoral position at the laboratory of Professor Paulo Costa, she was responsible for monitoring the research output of all team members, integrating their results with her own, and managing various resources in the lab to ensure that all deadlines and milestones were met. During this period, she gained extensive experience in drug screenings. Motivated by a profound interest in neuroscience research, Ângela Inácio joined the Synapse Biology Lab at CNC-UC in 2017. She was awarded a postdoctoral fellowship by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) to conduct research on synaptic dysfunction in neurodevelopmental disorders, under the mentorship of Prof. Ana Luísa Carvalho. The focus of her research is on genetic defects associated with neurodevelopmental disorders, specifically exploring how genes coding for synaptic proteins may impact synaptic function and brain connectivity. Ângela employs a combination of molecular genetics, animal behaviour, and electrophysiological approaches in her work. Her research has recently been published in Molecular Psychiatry (co-first author). Since 2021, she has held the position of a junior researcher at CNC. Ângela is a co-author of 17 original publications in international, peer-reviewed journals, with 5 of them as the first author. Since graduating, Ângela Inácio has supervised two master theses and one undergraduate student project. She has also co-supervised four master students, mentored several trainees and master students in laboratory rotations, and served as the main examiner for one master thesis. Additionally, she completed an animal experimentation course accredited by DGAV and an extensive hands-on electrophysiology course at the University of Göttingen in Germany. Ângela has taught practical classes on electrophysiology and 3D morphometric analysis for students in the Master's degree in Cellular and Molecular Biology, the PhD Programme in Experimental Biology and Biomedicine at the University of Coimbra (Portugal), and the ETN Synaptic Dysfunction in Neuropsychiatric Disorders (Syn2Psy Network School). She has also taught practical classes for students in the Bachelor's Degree in Biomedical Engineering, Biology, and Medicinal Chemistry. In 2022, she was an instructor at the Bordeaux School of Neuroscience for the workshop "Introduction to Experimental Neuroscience." Ângela has served as a reviewer for the Journal of Neurochemistry, the British Journal of Pharmacology, eLife, and the Journal of Neuroscience. She actively participated in preparing grant applications for research funding from national and international agencies. Additionally, Ângela collaborates with the CNC Outreach Programme, regularly participating in science communication activities as part of Ciência Viva, Brain Awareness Week, and European Researchers' Night initiatives.
