Luís Macedo is a teacher at the Department of Informatics Engineering at the University of Coimbra and a member of the Artificial Intelligence and Creativity Lab of the Cognitive and Media Systems, at the Center for Informatics and Systems of the University of Coimbra. He earned his PhD in Informatics Engineering in 2007 from the University of Coimbra. His research interests revolve around Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Cognitive Science. While he finds all subjects within the fields of AI and Cognitive Science fascinating, his primary focus has been on machine learning, active machine learning, human-in-the-loop, imitation learning, trustworthy and responsible AI, autonomous agents and multi-agent systems, cooperative AI, hybrid intelligence human-AI, recommender systems, affective computing (especially, surprise and curiosity), decision-making under uncertainty, information theory, computational creativity, and selective attention. His publications include more than 100 papers in these areas. He has been reviewer and member of the Program Committee of many international conferences and journals in these areas, including the International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence - IJCAI (CORE rank: A+), European Conference on Artificial Intelligence (CORE rank A), and The Annual Meeting of the Cognitive Science Society (CORE rank: A; as meta-reviewer). He is actively collaborating with the Technology Department of CERN. He has been involved in some national and international projects. He was a member of various Master's and Ph.D. thesis committees. He supervised 4 Ph.D. theses and more than 40 MSc theses. He is currently supervising 3 PhDs, one of the them in collaboration with CERN, and 6 MSc theses, one of them in collaboration with ETH Zurich. He served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Portuguese Association for Artificial Intelligence (APPIA) for 8 years, from 2011 to 2019, including two years as the vice-president, from 2014 to 2015. He is the co-coordinator of the Course on Quantum Computing and Technologies, at the University of Coimbra. Within his academic responsibilities, he is the lecturer for the courses on Artificial Intelligence (Master of Science in Informatics Engineering), Human-centered Artificial Intelligence (Master of Science in Data Science and Engineering), and Topics on Artificial Intelligence (Bachelor of Data Science and Engineering). He was recognised by the International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence, IJCAI-2023, as distinguished Program Committee member. He was the recipient of the University of Coimbra Prize for Pedagogical Innovation 2020, issued by Santander/University of Coimbra.
