Adelaide Meira Serras is currently Associate Professor at the School of Arts and Humanities, University of Lisbon. She holds a PhD in English Culture from the University of Lisbon (1994), with a thesis on Bernard Mandeville’s thoughts on early18th-century England. In her MA dissertation, in English Studies (1985) on Samuel Butler’s “The Way of All Flesh”. She obtained her Habilitation in English Literature and Culture in 2015 with a report focusing on 18th-century utopias as landmarks of then-current significant political, economic and epistemological issues. She has served at the School of Arts and Humanities, University of Lisbon since 1980 in English Studies and has taught several units of undergraduate courses, such as English History and Culture, 16th-18th cent, Modern Culture; MA units: Theories of Culture; Real Cities, Imaginary Cities; and Urban Visions – the predominance of dystopia (PhD students). Serras has also taught an optional unit on Science Fiction and Fantasy, She has held several positions: Vice-President and President of the Pedagogical Council (2005-2207; 2007-2009, respectively); Head of the Department of English (2015-2019); director of the traineeship seminar of the Culture and Communication course; Head of the English Department (2015-2019); Member of the Scientific Council (2019-2023); Head of ULICES (2015- 2019). She has supervised PhD theses (2 complete; 7 ongoing) and 22 MA dissertations (21 complete; 1 ongoing). She is a member of the editorial board of ULICES “Páginas de Anglística” and Anglo Saxonica, Chimaera’ ; main editor of “Empire Building and Modernity”. Vol. II. co-editor of “Fernando de Mello Moser. Um Tributo”, 2015; and “A Scholar for all Seasons”. Homenagem a João de Almeida Flor, 2012. She has been a member of innumerous MA and PhD juris and PhD external examiner. She participated in international projects such as ENEID: Early Novel in English, 1660-1700: Database; and Textual Editing; , partnering with Sorbonne Université, the University of Huelva, Vienna, Valencia, La Laguna, Manitoba, Leeds and Cádiz. She is member of The Literary London Reading Group. She participates in national projects such as Interdisciplinary Group on Medievalism (GIMTA), coordinates the Street and the City cycle of conferences since 2015 thus bringing to the fore city studies in relation to viz. literature, the visual arts, tourism, with the collaboration of IGOT - the Institute of Geography and Spatial Planning of the University of Lisbon and ESHTE - Estoril Higher School of Hotel Management and Tourism. She co-coordinates the project of Science Fiction and Fantasy – Messenger from the Stars. Within the scope of her ULICES’ research group - English Culture, she was part of the project Culture and Empire. The British Empire: Ideologies, perspectives and perceptions, contributing with articles for the three published volumes and with the edition of Vol. 2, “Empire Building and Modernity”, 2011. AMSerras has presented papers and hosted events to boost the interchange of ideas such as Enlightenment, progress, liberty, gender issues, the role of science, among other topics that remain up-to-date. She has also endorsed interdisciplinary approaches bringing together culture, literature and memory studies. She created and has been the scientific coordinator of the School of Arts and Humanities Alumni programme since 2014.
