Dr Tiago Dantas is a Principal Investigator at ICVS in the Medical School of the University of Minho, supported by a CEEC contract from FCT. He has published 24 manuscripts in peer-reviewed, internationally renowned journals (including Nature Communications, Developmental Cell, Journal of Cell Biology and Cell Reports), 10 of which as a first or co-first author, and 9 as the corresponding or co-corresponding author. His publications have a total of 809 citations and an h-index of 14. Dr Dantas started his scientific career as an Erasmus student investigating centrosome biology in the lab of Prof Ciaran Morrison at the National University of Ireland in Galway. He was then awarded a fellowship from FCT to continue his work in Prof Morrison's lab as a PhD student in 2008. His dissertation focused on the crosstalk between centrosomal proteins and the DNA damage response. After receiving his PhD in Ireland in 2012, Dr Dantas joined the lab of Prof Richard Vallee at Columbia University in New York, USA, where he was funded by the AHA/ASA to study the importance of ciliogenesis and molecular motors in neural stem cell proliferation. In addition, he studied the involvement of Dyneins in human disease. In 2018, Dr Dantas joined IBMC/i3S to start his own line of research funded by multiple FCT projects. Recently, Dr Dantas transfered his lab to ICVS, where his group is interested in: A) uncovering cilia-dependent mechanisms that regulate cell cycle progression and proliferation of neural stem cells during brain development; and B) dissecting the underlying causes for the severe cases of Dynein-2-associated skeletal ciliopathies. In 2025, Dr Dantas was invited to transfer his lab to ICVS at the University of Minho, where he currently leads 1 postdoc (Dr Sonia Rocha), 1 PhD Student (Tiago Ribeiro), 1 Master student (Catarina Barbosa) and 2 undergraduate students (Sara Lopes and Paulo Ribeiro). He is also a co-supervisor of 2 PhD students at i3S Porto in the Gassmann and Abreu labs. Throughout his career, Dr Dantas has supervised many students (6 PhD plus 7 Master students, see extended CV for details) and postdocs (Dr José B Gama and Dr Sónia Rocha). He also mentored junior Post-docs and PhD students while in the Vallee lab. He was Examiner in the defense of 1 Undergraduate, 9 Master and 4 PhD theses (1 in Ireland and 1 in the Netherlands). He is also an editorial board member of the Communications Biology (Nat. group) and Frontiers in Cellular Neuroscience journals. He edited and organized the "Centrosomes and Cilia" special collection at Communications Biology (Nature PG). 2021: https://www.nature. com/collections/iadheaabic During the last 5 years, Dr. Dantas was the corresponding author of 4 research articles detailing major breakthroughs in understanding ciliary transport (including a Cell Rep and a JCB that received 1 cover and 1 highlight by experts), 3 review/editorial articles (2 of them as corresponding author), alongside 2 collaborative studies (1 as pre-print with the Abreu lab, favorably reviewed in JCB; and another also at JCB with the Gassmann lab).
