Samuel Oliveira specializes in Ancient Philosophy (especially Plato), but devotes himself also to Medieval Philosophy (Origen, Augustine, Thomas Aquinas) and to Bernard Williams' thought. He works on topics such as freedom, want of self-control (akrasia), truth, image, caring for oneself and others. He had a scholarship to FCT (2012-2016) and conducted part of his PhD at Freie Universität Berlin. In 2019, he finished his PhD in Philosophy (specialising in Philosophical Anthropology) at Lisbon New University, with a thesis on Plato and the Problem of metaxy as Fundamental Determination. In the same year, he obtained a scholarship from the Instituto Europeu de Ciências da Cultura Padre Manuel Antunes and undertook scientific projects in the capacity of researcher and executive coordinator. He co-edited a book on Plato's Alcibiades Major (2016, 2nd ed. 2020) and a book on the history of social and political ideas (2021). He has received the Manuel Barbosa da Costa Freitas Philosophical Essay Prize, awarded by the Portuguese Catholic University in 2019. In 2020, Minho University awarded him an accreditation as a teacher of Philosophy, the field where he performs his teaching activity. More recently, he has been working as a translator and reviewer of scientific texts in the Philosophy, Theology, History, Politics and Ethics fields.
