Paula Marques Figueiredo earned her Ph.D. summa cum laude in Neotectonics and Active Neotectonics from the University of Lisbon in 2015. Her doctoral research focused on the Quaternary tectonics of the Southwest of Portugal, supervised by João Cabral (University of Lisbon) and Thomas K. Rockwell (San Diego State University, California). She benefited from an FCT Ph.D. scholarship. Presently she is an Assistant Research Professor and Laboratory Manager of the Geochronology Laboratories in the Marine, Earth, and Atmospheric Sciences at North Carolina State University, USA. She is an Early Career Researcher Representative in INQUA (International Quaternary Association), as a member of TERPRO (Commission on Terrestrial Processes, Deposits, and History where paleoseismology is framed). After earning her Ph.D. she received 9 funded projects, 4 of them as Principal Investigator. She authors and co-authors ~ 30 peer-reviewed papers, 3 book chapters, 2 technical reports, and about 80 conference abstracts (28 of them as extended abstracts peer-reviewed), resulting in 452 citations (Scopus, h-index 13). Figueiredo's research focuses on the study of crustal deformation through the characterization of active tectonic systems and their evolution through time and space, combining different approaches, such as paleoseismology, tectonic geomorphology, structural geology, geophysics, remote sensing, and geochronology. She is a paleoseismologist and earthquake geologist who specializes in applying geochronology methods to active tectonics and related natural hazards. Presently she collaborates with several universities, and geological surveys in the USA and elsewhere, investigating seismogenic sources and quantifying rates of deformation and earthquake timings. Particularly noteworthy, her research in North Carolina was the first earthquake geology and successful paleoseismology investigation in Eastern USA.
