Duarte Pedro Mata de Oliveira Valério - I am currently Associate Professor at Instituto Superior Técnico (IST) - University of Lisbon, Department of Mechanical Engineering, and member of a research centre associated with IST. I got my MSc (2001) and my PhD (2005) at IST, in Mechanical Engineering, with theses on fractional control, i.e. on the use of fractional (non-integer) order derivatives in control. I have worked with fractional control and fractional dynamic systems, and their applications in several areas, ever since. I also broadened my research to energy conversion (in particular to the control of Wave Energy Converters, that produce electricity from the energy of sea waves) and bioengineering applications, applying my knowledge of robotics (to surgical robots and human-robot interaction) and modelling and control of dynamic systems (to biological processes). I have co-authored over sixty papers in journals with impact factors, three books (two published by the London-based Institution of Engineering and Technology - IET; a third published by De Gruyter), over seventy papers in conference proceedings, and nine book chapters. I participated in over ten research projects, being the principal investigator of three. I supervised a postdoctoral researcher, over thirty MSc students who already concluded their theses, and currently supervise four PhD students. I received the Riemann-Liouville Award at IFAC-sponsored conference Fractional Differentiation and its Applications 2008, for significant applied work by a young researcher, and the Progress in Fractional Differentiation and Application Award at the First Online Conference on Modern Fractional Calculus and its Applications 2020, for achievements in the area of fractional calculus and applications. I have also been involved in teaching 13 courses at IST and have reviewed papers for over 50 journals.
