João Franco Machado is a Resident Pharmacist at Western Lisbon Hospital Centre since January 2024 and an Invited Assistant Professor at Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Lisbon since February 2025. He has an Integrated Master’s degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences (PharmD) by the Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Lisbon (2016) and a PhD degree in Chemistry by the Faculty of Sciences, University of Lisbon (2024). He is currently pursuing his Specialist Degree in Clinical Chemistry. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ João started his research path as an undergraduate student at the Research Institute for Medicines (Lisbon, Portugal) in 2012. After graduating in 2016, he moved to the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (Switzerland) to work as a Teaching Assistant (2016-2017). João was named “Highly Commended in Chemical and Pharmaceutical Sciences” by The Global Undergraduate Awards under the patronage of His Excellency the President of Ireland in 2017. Afterwards, he moved back to Portugal to pursue a PhD in Bioinorganic Chemistry, jointly at the Centre for Structural Chemistry and at the Centre for Nuclear Sciences and Technologies (2018-2024). João received the “Honourable Distinction of the Portuguese Young Chemists Award” in 2025, granted by the Portuguese Chemical Society. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Currently, João develops his scientific activities in the fields of Clinical Chemistry and Medicinal Inorganic Chemistry at the Clinical Pathology Department of Western Lisbon Hospital Centre. He is interested in developing novel metallodrugs for diagnosis or precision therapy of renal, cardiac, or malignant diseases. He published 14 articles, 1 patent, 1 book chapter, 10 proceedings, 6 other publications, 17 oral communications, and 30 poster communications (h-index: 10). _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Technical skills: synthesis of inorganic and organometallic complexes with transition metal ions (Schlenk techniques); organic synthesis; solid-phase peptide synthesis assisted by ultrasounds or microwaves (automated and manual); chromatography (column, TLC, HPLC, LC-MS); mass spectrometry (ESI-MS); UV-visible, FT-IR, TR-FRET and fluorescence spectroscopies; 1D/2D NMR (1H, 13C, 31P, COSY, NOESY, HSQC, HMBC); potentiometry; cyclic voltammetry; gel electrophoresis; optical and digital microscopy; multiparametric flow cytometry; stability and drug release assays; protease and kinase based assays; determination of stability constants (KLM), protonation constants (KH), magnetic moments (µ), inhibition constants (IC50, Ki, MIC50), and partition coefficients (logP) of drug candidates with diverse chemical structures.
