Diogo A. M. Alexandrino is a researcher at CIIMAR, an Invited Adjunct Professor at the Department of Environmental Health of School of Health (Polytechnic of Porto) and a Research Associate of the European Science Foundation. His research has been focused on studying the microbial biodegradation of persistent organic pollutants, with a particular focus on fluorinated pollutants, which typically involves bioprospecting microbial communities from different environmental sources and their in vitro manipulation towards the selection and improvement of microorganisms with streamlined biodegradation capabilities. Diogo has also been interested in harnessing bacterial processes for pollution control, to mitigate anthropogenic pressures and to improve the circularity of various waste streams, either by using axenic bacteria, tailored bacterial consortia or by merging bacterial metabolism with synthetic processes. During his postdoctoral tenure, Diogo has been involved with the conceptualization and installation of the CIIMAR Blue Biobank, a repository of marine biological resources with a diversity of biotechnological applications, and has expanded considerably his collaborative network with scientific peers and private sector stakeholders across Europe. So far, Diogo has participated in 8 national and European projects (6 as team member and 2 as PI), published 21 research articles and 3 book chapters and has been involved in over 30 scientific communications (17 of which were oral communications).
