Olga Borges leads the Vaccines and Adjuvants research group within the Vectors and Gene Therapy unit of the Biotechnology field at CIBB–CNC (Centre for Neuroscience and Cell Biology), University of Coimbra. Her work focuses on the development of innovative adjuvants for subunit, DNA and mRNA vaccines, with particular emphasis on prophylactic and therapeutic vaccination strategies and alternative routes of administration beyond conventional injection, including oral and intranasal delivery. More recently, her research has expanded into the field of allergy immunotherapy. According to Scopus, Olga Borges has authored 71 scientific publications, which have received 2,596 citations and correspond to an h-index of 29. She was included in the Elsevier list of the “World’s Top 2% Scientists” in both 2021 and 2022. Across her academic career, she has contributed to 81 publications in different formats, including one edited book, seven book chapters, 71 ISI-indexed journal articles, one guideline, two articles in Portuguese journals, and nine congress abstracts published in journals. Her contribution to these works is particularly significant: she is first, corresponding or last author in approximately 75% of her ISI articles and 71% of her book chapters. Notably, around 80% of her ISI publications report experimental work conducted largely within her own laboratory, while the remainder consist of review articles. Her research has also been widely disseminated through more than 57 oral presentations and over 61 poster communications at international congresses, symposia and workshops. As principal investigator, Olga Borges has successfully secured competitive funding for her research group through seven projects, totalling more than €700,000. These include three projects funded by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), one transnational FCT PROSAFE project involving partners in Romania and Switzerland, one project funded by Gilead Sciences, and two grants/prizes from private entities. She has also contributed to the preparation of eight successful proposals that led to FCT doctoral fellowships (four-year awards), as well as CAPES-funded postdoctoral and sandwich PhD fellowships for Brazilian students. In addition, she participates as a researcher in twelve other competitive projects currently under development at the University of Coimbra. Olga Borges has been repeatedly invited to serve on editorial boards and has contributed to nine international journals, including Vaccines (MDPI) and Frontiers. She has served as a guest editor for six special issues and is a regular editor for Vaccines. She is also a lecturer at the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Coimbra, where she has taught for 25 years. Her teaching experience spans theoretical, practical and laboratory classes across nine curricular units, and she has coordinated five units, including those she currently teaches: Vaccine and Adjuvant Production Technology (optional), Pharmaceutical Technology II, and Regulation in Drug Development. Throughout her academic career, Olga Borges has supervised more than 43 undergraduate final projects, 12 completed MSc theses (with six additional MSc students currently conducting research in her laboratory), and eight PhD candidates. Among these, five doctoral theses were completed under her supervision at the University of Coimbra, and three were defended through sandwich programmes at Brazilian universities. She currently supervises three PhD students expected to complete within the next one to two years and one recently enrolled student. She has also supervised five postdoctoral researchers.
