From 1971 he began studies on morphology of the mono spore mycelium of grapevine powdery mildew (Uncinula ne-cator). These trials were continued on biological behaviour of U. necator growing on leaf discs, conducting to the devel-opment of accurate methods to evaluate resistance of varieties and clones and morphological characterization of cell spherosomes. From 1978 he began to introduce plant breeding and quantitative genetics principles on classical clonal selection and on analysis of genetic variability within ancient grapevine varieties. This originated: the recognising of intravarietal genetic variability of the main Portuguese grapevine varieties, as the true raw material for selection, allowing better understanding of origin and evolution of varieties and better knowledge about the strategies of conservation; the development of a new selection methodology – Polyclonal selection - , and the obtaining of polyclonal selected materials; the development of a new clonal selection methodology strongly based on the study of genotype×environment interaction. He created and coordinates a Portuguese Selection Network that undergoes continuously selection all over the country and distributes polyclonal and clonal material to vinegrowers. In 2009, as representative of his Institution (Instituto Superior de Agrono-mia) was a founding member (among 13 others) and the main methodological contributor of the Portuguese Association for the grapevine diversity (PORVID). PORVID is a non-profit association that brings together the skills of knowledge producing entities, companies in the wine industry and other stakeholders in the areas of wine and biodiversity, for carry-ing out the conservation and utilization of the genetic diversity in old varieties and wild grapevine populations. Its key goal is the conservation of 50.000 representative genotypes of intra-varietal diversity of all autochthonous varieties in an Ex-perimental Pole provided by the State (in 2010), followed by their economic use (selection and others) through high effi-ciency innovative methods. He was President of the Portuguese Association for the grapevine diversity (PORVID) from its foundation until 2021. Member of the GENET expert group (International Organisation of Vine and Wine-OIV Portuguese commission). Member of the research centre Linking Landscape, Environment, Agriculture and Food (LEAF), Instituto Superior de Agronomia, University of Lisbon (ISA-UL).
